Elkins High School 4x800 relay teams set new league marks

RACHEL — The Elkins High School girls and boys 4×800-meter relay teams set new marks during the Big 10 Conference Championships held Wednesday at Husky Field at Roy Michael Stadium.

The team of Julia Biola, Maddie Belan, Mallory Bennett and Emilia Tenney turned in a time of 10:04.90 for the Lady Tigers to outdistance runner-up Fairmont Senior’s effort of 10:17.71 and shatter Grafton’s time of 10:11.07 set in 2008.

Trevor George, Gavin Brown, Ben Tenney and Bobby Valentine, meanwhile, finished in a time of 8:10.75 to not only break the school record the unit set earlier this season, but Bridgeport’s Big 10 mark of 8:14.41 accomplished in 2018.

“Maddie, Mallory and Gavin are all seniors,” said EHS girls coach Scott Biola. “It’s great to see them set meet records in their final Big 10 meet.”

The EHS girls finished sixth overall with 51 points.

Bridgeport took the title with 156 points, followed by East Fairmont (131.5), Grafton (76) Preston (70), Fairmont Senior (65), Elkins, host North Marion (47.5), Lincoln (30), Robert C. Byrd (27), Lewis County (25), Philip Barbour (12), B-U (7) and Liberty (4).

Freshman Marissa Brenwalt also captured first for the Lady Tigers in the 300 hurdles (48.09), was second in the high jump (5-00.00) and fourth in the long jump (15-09.75).

Biola was second in the 800 (2:26.76) and Tenney runner-up in the 1,600 (5:11.49).

Philip Barbour’s Kayla Baker placed fifth in the 800 (2:35.95).

The EHS boys also captured first in the 4×200 relay, as the unit of Johnathan Dean, Andres Masten, Chris See and DeMarcus Franklin finished in 1:32.65.

“After working on our 4×200 all season, and making slight alterations each week, we finally put it all together,” said EHS boys coach Shane Richardson. “I couldn’t be happier for these guys.”

The Tigers, who placed fifth overall with 66 points, also picked up second-place finishes from Dean, Josh Bodkins, Elias Jones and Masten in the 4×400 relay in a time 3:37.36, George in the 3,200 (9:45.69) and Valentine in the 800 (2:02.50).

Brown was third in the 800 (2:02.74), Tenney fourth in the 800 (2:04.17) and Bodkins fourth in the 1,600 (4:29.72).

Philip Barbour’s John McGee captured the discus with a toss of 162-02 and was fifth in the shot put (43-08.50), Drew Morrall second in the 100 (11.12), Jeremy Horne third in the shot put (45-10.50), Isaiah Starks fourth in the 400 (52.96) and Patrick Webster fifth in the long jump (19-02.00).

B-U’s Jack Waggy placed fifth in the 1,600 (4:34.49) and the 4×800 relay team of Camdin Carpenter, Joey Nolte, Waggy and Zack Simmons third in a time of 8:27.30.

Bridgeport also captured the boys title with 182 points.

East Fairmont was second with 83.75 points, followed by Fairmont Senior (83), Grafton (70), Elkins, Lincoln (54), Philip Barbour (45.75), Preston (37.75), Lewis County(31), B-U (19), North Marion (15), Liberty (6.75) and RCB (5).

Elkins will return to Rachel on Wednesday to compete in the Class AA, Region I Championships.

Field events begin at 2 p.m., with running events set to follow at 2:30 p.m.

B-U is set to battle in the Class AAA, Region 1 Championships Thursday at Mylan Park in Morgantown and Philip Barbour in the Class AA, Region II Championships Wednesday at Keyser High School.
