Bucs get win over Monarchs

MOUNDSVILLE — Fifth-seed Buckhannon-Upshur picked up a 6-1 win over fourth-seed John Marshall Monday in Class AAAA, Region I action.

The Bucs (9-15) were slated to visit top-seed Wheeling Park on Tuesday in the double-elimination tourney.

Brody McDaniels allowed one run on five hits in going the distance for the win. He fanned five and walked just one.

B-U scored two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh after the game was tied 1-1.

Jevon Westfall had an RBI single in the fifth to give the Bucs the lead for good.

Jaxon Spratt then cracked a run-producing double to make it 3-1.

Spratt, who was 3 for 4 on the night, added a two-run single in the seventh and Wyatt Mason was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded to conclude the scoring.

Landon Marple and Ethan Garvin added two hits each for B-U. Drahden Rice had an RBI single in the fifth.

Kayden Knapp’s RBI single in the third had given the Monarchs a1-0 lead.

Tommy Clegg was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on eight hits in going the first 6 1/3 frames. He fanned five and walked one.

John Marshall will face the loser between the Bucs and Wheeling Park today in an elimination game.
