Bucs’ season concludes in loss to Patriots

WHEELING — Buckhannon-Upshur’s season came to a conclusion in a 5-2 setback to top-seed Wheeling Park Thursday night in Class AAAA, Region I tourney play.

The fifth-seeded Bucs had stayed alive in the top bracket of the region with a 5-4 win at fourth-seed John Marshall on Wednesday.

They had fell to the elimination round after dropping a heart-breaking 1-0 verdict to Wheeling Park on Tuesday.

B-U took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning in Thursday’s matchup when Wyatt Mason singled in Luke Kesling and Jacob Frye.

Kesling was 3 for 4 on the evening and Mason 2 for 3.

The Patriots, however, scored four times in the fourth en route to capturing a spot in a best-of-three regional final series against second-seed Morgantown, which advanced from the bottom bracket with a 3-0 win over third-seed University on Friday.

Nate Simon cracked a two-run double and Kolton Whitmire, who tossed a no-hitter against B-U on Tuesday, an RBI single.

Ryland Robb added a run-producing single.

Drahden Rice was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out four.

Frye finished in relief for the Bucs, who ended the season 10-17.

Robb went the first three innings for Wheeling Park. He gave up two runs on two hits and fanned four.

Tanner Burkhart pitched three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts and Simon one inning, fanning two batters.
