Colts look to secure state berth today
PHILIPPI — Philip Barbour can secure a berth in the state tourney today when the Class AA, Region II best-of-three series against South Harrison resumes.
Game 2 of the series is set for 11 a..m. today at Frank Loria Memorial Field in Nutter Fort after Friday’s contest was called off due to the weather.
The Colts (21-6) took Thursday’s opener, 9-5, in Philippi as Kale Wolfe cracked a grand slam as part of an eight-run fifth inning.
The Hawks plated four runs in the top of the first, using a two-run double from Seth Gain, an RBI double from Layton Wageman and Dane Tate’s run-producing groundout.
The score remained 4-0 until Philip Barbour’s fifth-inning scoring surge.
Anthony Mosesso led off the frame with a single, Slaton Harris reached on an error and Robbie Jones drew a walk to load the bases.
Jack Wilson then plated courtesy-runner Cam Bennett on a bunt single before Wolfe cleared the bases with a homer over the right-field fence to give the Colts the lead for good at 5-4.
Nick Gonzales continued the rally by reaching on an error and Landyn Carpenter drew a walk.
Two outs later, Mosesso’s second at-bat of the frame resulted in a two-run double, and Harris followed with an RBI single.
The Hawks picked up a run in the sixth when Zane Harlow drew a bases-loaded walk.
But Philip Barbour answered in the home-half of the inning when Tyler Sisson’s double plated Carpenter to conclude the scoring.
Grant Harris worked the first 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. He gave up five runs (just two being earned) on three hits and fanned six.
Jones finished in relief, allowing no runs on two hits.
Wageman was saddled with the loss after surrendering eight runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of action. He struck out six.
Tate and Jacob Watts finished in relief.
Wolfe, Mosesso and Wilson each had two hits for the Colts.
Wageman and Gain had two safeties apiece for the Hawks (22-14).
