Cougars end Bulldogs’ season on walk-off homer
Mason Hamilton’s game-winner sends East Hardy to states
BAKER — Third-seed East Hardy ended top-seed Tygarts Valley’s season in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night.
Mason Hamilton’s walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed the Cougars to sweep the best-of-three Class A, Region II final and earn a berth in next week’s state tournament.
The Bulldogs had battled back from a 5-3 deficit take a 6-5 advantage on Jacob Wamsley’s solo homer to center in the fifth inning.
Evan Hamilton led off the seventh for East Hardy with a single to center.
Mason Hamilton followed with the series-clinching shot over the right-field fence.
Tygarts Valley, which lost the first game of the series, 5-2, Monday in Mill Creek, took a 2-0 lead in the first when walks to Jaxon Drennen, Kendall Armstrong and Kaden Moore loaded the bases.
Two outs later, Austin Gear delivered a clutch single to left to score Drennen and Armstrong.
The Cougars answered with a two-run single from Levi Price and Jordan Teets’ RBI sacrifice fly in the home-half of the frame to take a 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs drew even in the second when Ian Harris walked, stole second, moved to third on Avery Row-Sponaugle’s sacrifice bunt and raced home on Austin Wilson’s fly out to left.
Evan Hamilton then tripled in Mills and scored on a wild pitch to give the hosts a two-run cushion after two innings of play.
In the third, Moore cracked a one-out double and Austin Teter drew a walk in front of Wamsley’s single to tie the game at 5-5.
Garrett Van Meter went the first three innings for the Cougars, allowing five runs on four hits and walking three.
Mason Hamilton pitched two frames of relief, surrendering one run on three hits and fanning one.
Evan Hamilton closed in relief to earn the win, striking out all six batters he faced.
Wamsley was tagged with the loss. The junior right-hander went all six-plus innings, giving up eight hits, striking out four and walking just one batter.
Tygarts Valley, which didn’t have an error in the game, finished the season with an 18-9 record.
