EHS boys win pair of relays; George captures the 3,200

RACHEL — The Elkins High School boys captured a pair of relay events and one individual title in Wednesday’s Class AAA, Region I track meet hosted by North Marion.

The Tigers’ 4×200-meter relay team — comprised of seniors Johnathan Dean, Andres Masten, Christopher See and DeMarcus Franklin — turned in a time of 1:31.81 to capture the regional title, while 4×800 unit of junior Ben Tenney, junior Bobby Valentine, senior Gavin Brown and junior Josh Bodkins was first with an effort of 8:35.39.

Sophomore Trevor George, the reigning cross county individual state champion, won the regional title in the 3,200 in a time of 9:46.59.

George also finished fourth in the 1,600 (4:35.81).

Placing second and qualifying for states were Tenney in the 3,200 (9:50.53), Dean in the 400 (53.55) and sophomore Randal Marks in the high jump (5-08).

The 4×100 relay (junior JJ Cepeda, Masten, See and Franklin) finished second with a time of 44.06.

Earning thirds for the Tigers were freshman Isaac Workman in the discus (115-07), Bodkins in the 1,600 (4:31.46), the shuttle hurdle unit (Masten, freshman Elias Jones, Cepeda and sophomore Logan Rowan) in a time of 1:03.16 and 4×400 relay (Dean, Tenney, Brown and Masten) with an effort of 3:36.45.

Freshman Donovan Howes was fourth in the discus (115-04).

Elkins finished third in the team standings with 122.

East Fairmont claimed top honors with 140 points to hold off runner-up Williamstown’s 135.

Wheeling Central (83), Weir (71), Grafton (62), Oak Glen (35) and North Marion (28) rounded out the field.

The top two individuals and relays from each region advance to the state meet slated to be held May 23-24 at University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field.

The remaining eight spots earn at-large berths from the all four region meets based on fastest times and distances.
