Elkins staves off late charge from Moorefield, 11-10

ELKINS — Elkins held off a late Moorefield charge to claim an 11-10 victory on Thursday night.

The Tigers led 11-5 before the Yellow Jackets used a grand slam from Ben Watts and Kali Greenwalt’s RBI single to get within one.

But a fly out with the bases empty ended the contest.

Elkins led 4-0 after two innings but Moorefield tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth.

An RBI single by Owen Stanley and Dyer Barger’s run-producing double in the home-half of the frame put the Tigers back in front.

They then erupted for four runs in the sixth as Trent Stone singled in a run and later scored in a passed ball and Barger cracked a two-run double.

Trevor Hogue had an RBI single to give Elkins a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Tigers then scored three times in the second on an RBI single from Caleb McCauley and Brayden Biller’s two-run single.

Biller had three hits on the night.

Ollie Crites had three safeties for Moorefield. Cyrus Kump, Shawn Reed and Trevor Baldwin had two hits each.

McCauley earned the win, working two scoreless innings and striking out four.

Drew Hinzman and Biller also saw time on the mound.

Hinzman had four strikeouts and Biller recorded two.

Blake Snyder was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over three innings of action. He didn’t record a strikeout and walked two.

Elkins (7-17) is slated to visit Fairmont Senior Monday in Class AAA, Region I action.
