Lady Tigers fall to Preston, 10-6

ELKINS — Elkins dropped a 10-6 decision to Big 10 Conference foe Preston Wednesday night at Betty Heckel Field.

Savannah Goff had two RBIs for the Lady Knights, who plated four runs in the second and single runs in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings to two insurance runs in the seventh.

The Lady Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first when Mady Shreve and Addison Carr drew one-out walks. Gabby Mahanes followed with a single to left and Maddie Lambert later added an RBI groundout.

Hannah Liston cracked an RBI double during Preston’s four-run second inning.

Elkins cut the deficit to 5-4 in the home-half of the frame when Serenity Shifflett raced home on a passed ball and Carr hit into an RBI fielder’s choice.

The Lady Knights tacked on an RBI double by Sophie Zinn in the third, and Liston scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-4.

A bases-loaded walk to Mahanes in the bottom of inning brought the Lady Tigers back to within two runs.

Camdyn Metheny’s RBI double in the fifth put Preston back on the board, and the visitors pushed the advantage to 10-5 in the seventh on a two-run single from Goff.

Mahanes added a solo homer to left field for Elkins in the home-half of the frame to end the scoring.

Carr and Lambert both saw time on the mound for the Lady Tigers. Carr had three strikeouts and Lambert four.

Hailey Riffle, Mahanes and Shifflett each had two hits in the loss for Elkins.

On Tuesday evening, the Lady Tigers handed host Tygarts Valley a 16-1 setback.

Elkins erupted for 12 runs in the fourth inning.

Carr had a three-run homer in the third, while Riffle went 2 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs and Shreve three hits.

Emily Smith had two hits and Alyssa Swecker drove in a run for the Lady Bulldogs, who claimed an 18-7 win at Pocahontas County on Monday.

Smith had four hits and five RBIs, including an inside-the-park homer, Addie Riddle a home run and three RBIs and Swecker, Kailen Yokum and winning pitcher Lilly Lanham two RBIs each.

The Lady Tigers (8-11) will host Robert C. Byrd at 6 p.m. Friday for a Big 10 contest.
