Lady Tigers stay alive in sectional play

FAIRMONT — Fourth-seed Elkins remained alive in the Class AAA, Region I, Section 2 tournament by outslugging third-seed East Fairmont, 17-12, on Thursday evening.

The Lady Tigers (9-13) will now visit No. 2 Fairmont Senior today in another elimination game.

Top-seed Grafton blanked the Lady Polar Bears, 11-0, on Thursday.

Hailey Riffle, Mady Shreve and Addison Carr each had four safeties for Elkins, which had 23 hits on the night.

Carr had four RBIs, Shreve three doubles and two RBIs and Raleigh Wingfield and Serenity Shifflett two RBIs apiece.

The Lady Tigers scored in every inning, including four in the first and three in each of the sixth and seventh innings.

The Lady Bees, who were plagued by eight errors, were led at the plate by Brooklyn Haddix, who had three RBIs.

Gracie Snyder added three hits.

Carr and Maddie Lambert both saw time on the mound for Elkins.

Carr struck six and Lambert fanned two.

B-U 6, Preston 3

TENNERTON — Alyssa Abel hit a three-run homer and Kynnedy Marple tossed a four-hitter as second-seed Buckhannon-Upshur defeated No. 3 Preston, 6-3, to remain in the Class AAA, Region I, Section 2 tournament on Thursday evening.

The Lady Bucs (10-10) travel to top-seed University today, needing a pair of victories to win the sectional crown.

Abel’s homer in the first gave B-U a 3-0 cushion.

The Lady Bucs added an RBI sacrifice fly in the third from Reagan Mason.

The Lady Knights got on the board in the fourth on Myla Wotring’s run-producing double.

RBI single in the fifth from Avery Hamer and Taylor Spratt extened the lead to 6-1.

Preston added single runs in the sixth and seventh but Marple fanned the final batter to end the game with a runner on third.
