Point Park wins MEC tourney title

CHARLESTON — Top-seed Point Park (Pa.) captured the Mountain East Conference Baseball Championship with a 7-0 win over Fairmont State Sunday at GoMart Ballpark.
Despite the loss, Fairmont State earned the league’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division II tourney as the runner-up because of Point Park’s transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II,.
Point Park is not yet eligible for the NCAA postseason until it becomes a full NCAA member.
Fairmont State defeated Frostburg State, 7-0, Saturday night to secure the automatic qualifier and advance to the championship game.

MEC Player of the Year Jared Campbell homered in the top of the third to put the Pioneers ahead, 2-0, and they never relinquished the lead from there.
Campbell, who has homered four times in three MEC Baseball Tournament games, hit a two-run homer in the third.
Frostburg State received a two-run homer from Ryan Bouma in the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 4-2, but PPU added a run in the sixth and two more in the ninth for insurance.
The Bobcats’ Mikey Guy hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, but that capped the scoring.
Campbell finished 2-for-4 with two runs, a walk, and a stolen base. Crixtian Taveras also went 2-for-4, scoring a pair of runs.
Orlando Leon pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win.
Fairmont State 8
Frostburg State 0
In an elimination game and with the MEC’s Automatic Qualification spot on the line, Fairmont State used a six-run third inning to pull away from Frostburg State.
Connor Bailey led the Falcons with a three-hit night, while Noah Canterbury and Quintin Reep each had a pair of hits. Ryan Goff drove in two runs, as did Canterbury.
