Tigers drop verdict to Senior in regional opener
FAIRMONT — Logan Canfield allowed just one hit over six innings as second-seed Fairmont Senior claimed a 10-2 win over seventh-seed Elkins Monday night in Class AAA, Region I tourney action.
The Tigers (7-18) were scheduled to visit No. 6 Weir, which fell at third-seed Grafton on Monday, Tuesday evening in an elimination game.
The Polar Bears jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead on Monday, adding five in the fourth and a single run sixth.
Elkins got on the board in the sixth on a two-run error.
Trevor Bigelow had a solo homer and three runs crossed on errors in the first for Fairmont Senior.
Brock Martin, who was 3 for 4, had a bases-clearing triple in the fourth.
Canfield struck out nine and walked one, before giving way to Blake Straight, who worked the seventh.
Brayden Biller went the first 3 1/3 innings in taking the loss. He gave up six runs, three being earned, on eight hits, fanning one and walking one.
Dyer Barger, Caleb McCauley and Isaac Shepler also saw time on the hill.
Barger recorded three strikeouts in going 1 1/3 innings, allowing no runs or hits.
Shepler gave up three runs on two hits and McCauley on run on two hits.
Biller had both of the Tigers’ hits, while Canfield and Matt Masters added two safeties each for the Polar Bears, who were slated to host Grafton on Tuesday evening.
