Wolfe pitches Colts past Bulldogs in regional opener
PHILIPPI — Kale Wolfe twirled a three-hitter and fanned 12 as top-seed Philip Barbour claimed a 5-1 win over fourth-seed Doddridge County Wednesday night in Class AA, Region II tourney play.
The Colts (19-5) will now host the winner of Thursday’s elimination contest between fifth-seed Ritchie County and Doddridge County on Friday, needing just win to move on to the best-of-three regional series against the bottom bracket winner.
Philip Barbour got on the board in the second inning when Tyler Sisson and Kent Rowan drew walks and moved up a base on Anthony Mosesso’s sacrifice bunt.
Another free pass to Slaton Harris loaded the bases and Grant Harris followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to right to chase home Sisson.
The Bulldogs drew even in the fourth as Luke Rokisky singled and Murphy followed with a double with one away.
Landon Clevenger’s fly out to left then allowed Rokisky to score.
However, the Colts plated three runs in the home-half of the frame and another in the fifth.
Rowan led off with the fourth with a single and Mosesso drew a walk.
One out later, Grant Harris garnered a free pass to load the bases for Robbie Jones, who singled left to score Rowan and put the hosts in the lead for good.
Wolfe followed with a clutch two-run double to center to make it 4-1, and Mosesso added an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Jack Wilson.
Clevenger was tagged with the loss, working the first three innings, giving up three runs on just one hit, striking out none and walking five.
Wolfe issued just one free pass on the evening.
Rokisky had two of Doddridge County’s three hits.
