Colts, Cougars prep for new-look state tourney

Four champs will be crowned after addition of Class AAAA for baseball

CHARLESTON — The 2025 baseball state tournament will have a new look this year and a different one in 2026 when play gets underway Thursday at GoMart Ballpark.

There will be four different champions crowned in the 2025 version, with the addition of Class AAAA in baseball.

Next year, the field will grow to eight teams among the four classes.

When Philip Barbour takes to the field on Thursday night against Logan, it will be the first appearance for the Colts in the state baseball tournament since 1975.

The Colts advanced as the Region III champion in the weather-plagued tournament, which took almost two weeks complete.

Contests were held in Charleston, Huntington and Parkersburg.

The eight-team field included Triadelphia, Parkersburg South, Moorefield, Sherman, Greenbrier East, Herbert Hoover and Logan.

Philip Barbour dropped a 2-1 verdict to Herbert Hoover in the first round in a game played at Bill Mire Field in Huntington.

Parkersburg South went on to defeat Triadelphia, 1-0, in the title game.

Wheeling Central is the top seed in the Class AA portion of the tournament and will face fourth-seed Wyoming East in Thursday’s other semifinal set to begin at 5 p.m.

The third-seeded Colts and second-seed Logan face off 50 minutes after its conclusion.

In Class A, the East Hardy Cougars are the third seed and battles No. 2 Gilmer County Thursday afternoon.

Top-seed Madonna and No. 4 Webster County tangle at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal.

Hurricane is the top seed in Class AAAA and faces No. 4 Hedgesville at 5 p.m. in Friday’s semifinals, with No. 3 Morgantown and No. 2 George Washington taking the field 50 minutes after the conclusion of the first semifinal.

Big 10 Conference member Fairmont Senior is seeded third, facing No. 2 Frankfort on Friday afternoon’s second Class AAA semifinal.

Top-seed Ripley and No. 4 Winfield meet at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal.

All four championship games are slated for Saturday, beginning with the Class A title contest at 10 a.m.
