Tygart Valley, Belington move to title contest

HUTTONSVILLE -- Host Tygart Valley and Belington are in the driver's seat of the District 8 Little League 10-12-year-old tournament after play over the weekend.

Tygart Valley defeated Braxton County, 13-0, on Friday, then claimed a 7-6 win over Elkins on Saturday to advance to the championship game against Belington at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Belington has received strong pitching in the tourney to advance to the title contest, as it blanked Summersville, 5-0, on Friday and Pocahontas County, 18-0, on Saturday.

The winner of Friday's game advances to the state tournament, set to begin July 11 in Elkins.

The loser will meet the winner of Friday's contest between Summersville and Pocahontas County in the runner-up final, with the victor also moving on to states.

Elkins was eliminated from the District 8 tourney by Summersvile, 13-0, on Saturday.

In 8-10-year-old District 8 action, also being played at the Tygart Valley Little League Fields, Elkins and Belington will play for the district title at 6 p.m. Friday.

Elkins defeated Tucker County, 19-7, on Friday and Braxton County, 13-10, on Saturday to advance, while Belington claimed a 13-8 win over Tygart Valley on Saturday.

Tucker County, which plays Braxton County at 8 p.m. on Friday, stayed alive in the tourney with an 11-1 victory over Tygart Valley on Sunday.

The loser between Elkins and Belington faces the winner between Tucker County and Braxton County in the runner-up contest, with the victor also moving on the state tournament to be begin July 4 in Huntington.
