PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed general manager Omar Khan to a three-year extension after an offseason that saw the team bring in quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Steelers announced the deal Thursday that will keep Khan with Pittsburgh through the 2028 season. He was hired as the team’s GM in 2022.

“Omar and his team have done a great job over the past three years in constructing our roster through the NFL draft, strategic trades, and free agency,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field.”

Khan and coach Mike Tomlin are structuring their offense around Rodgers, the four-time NFL MVP who’s returning for a 21st season. The 41-year-old Rodgers signed a one-year deal after a season in which Justin Fields and Russell Wilson combined to lead the Steelers to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth.

To bolster the receiver spot, Pittsburgh acquired two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf from Seattle. The Steelers quickly signed him to a five-year deal to bring some stability at the position.

Earlier this week, the team acquired All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from the Miami Dolphins for All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

The next order of business for Pittsburgh could be working out a new deal with star linebacker T.J. Watt. The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year is getting ready to enter the final season of the four-year extension he signed in September 2021.

In April, Pittsburgh will host the NFL draft. The Steelers are scheduled to have a dozen selections to reshape their roster. A priority figures to be in finding a long-term solution at QB.

“I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the city of Pittsburgh and our great fans,” said Khan, who’s in his 25th season with the Steelers.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills first-round draft pick Maxwell Hairston was accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a woman in 2021 at the University of Kentucky.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in federal court in Kentucky by a woman who claims Hairston entered her dorm room without being invited, ignored her when she said didn’t want to have sexual intercourse, forcibly removed her bottoms and sexually assaulted her. The Associated Press does not typically name alleged victims of sexual assault.

Texts seeking comment Wednesday were sent to agents for Hairston.

The Bills had no comment and referred to statements made by general manager Brandon Beane in April during the draft. Beane said at the time the team had “fully investigated” a sexual assault allegation from 2021 involving Hairston, who he called “an impeccable kid.”

“So that’s unfortunate when things like that are attached to someone’s name. And in this case, doesn’t seem to be anything there,” Beane said.

Hairston is from West Bloomfield, Michigan, and spent three seasons playing at Kentucky (2022-’24) before being selected by the Bills in the first round — 30th overall — of the NFL draft in April. The 21-year-old Hairston is being given the opportunity to win a starting job at cornerback this season.

The Bills have been off since completing their mandatory practices in mid-June, and return later this month for the start of training camp.

Dolphins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins are acquiring Darren Waller from the New York Giants, about a year after the veteran tight end announced his retirement from the NFL.

The Dolphins are sending a conditional 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the Giants for a 2027 seventh-rounder and the 32-year-old Waller, who will come out of retirement to play in Miami on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million, agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed. NFL Network first reported the trade.

The trade comes a day after Miami dealt Pro Bowler Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers after he had the most productive season of any tight end in Dolphins history. Miami was unwilling to pay Smith what he sought in a new contract and thus dealt him in a trade that also included All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who got his desire to play elsewhere.

The Dolphins received All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick in that trade.

Adding Waller immediately fills Miami’s need for a productive tight end. Before he stepped away from football in June 2024, Waller amassed 350 career receptions, 4,124 yards receiving and 20 touchdowns for the Ravens, Raiders and Giants.

He had breakout seasons in 2019 and ’20, when he had a combined 197 catches for 2,341 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for the 2020 season and would have gone the previous year as an alternate before sustaining a thumb injury.

Waller dealt with hamstring issues the last three years and was limited to 12 games with 52 catches for 552 yards and a touchdown in his one season with the Giants.
