KINGWOOD -- The Elkins High School girls and boys cross country teams held their own against perennial powerhouses at Preston High School's Knight Night Relays on Saturday evening.
The relay meet is a unique event that begins after sundown. Each runner on a four-person team traverses a 2,500-meter course lit by stadium lights, construction lights and tiki torches. A total of 18 schools took part in the event. Members of the top five relay teams in each race received "Goodr" brand sunglasses as prizes.
Elkins had four girls earn sunglasses, with its top girls relay finishing fourth out of 32 teams in a time of 39:16.1. Members of the EHS girls "A" team included Julia Biola, whose split time was 8:52.9, Emilia Tenney (8:59.8), Molly McFadden (10:03.1) and Emma Gilbert (11:20.2).
Four Tiger boys also earned sunglasses by way of finishing second out of 40 relay teams in a time of 30:32.7. Members of the Tiger boys "A" relay included Trevor George (7:22.4), Josh Bodkins (7:28.6), Bobby Valentine (7:50.5) and Ben Tenney (7:51.2).
"I'm so proud of the way our kids took care of business tonight," said EHS coach Scott Biola. "They showed that they are capable of being competitive against any school in our state--big or small."
The only girls teams to beat Elkins were quad schools, namely Morgantown (first, 36:44), University (second 37:12) and Parkersburg (third, 38:05). The same can be said for the Tiger boys, who were only beaten by defending AAA state champions University. The UHS boys "A" relay's winning time was 30:08.
The Elkins girls "B" relay took 25th via strong efforts by Haley Kelley (10:44.8), Haley Morgan (11:58.1), Delia White (12:07.0), and Taylor Lanham (12:28.3). Sarah Lipscomb (13:14.2) also competed individually for the girls.
The Elkins boys "B" relay finished 14th by way of fast times from Preston Nixon (8:04.0), Treven Schaefer (8:19.0), Logan Jones (8:38.2), and Reed Burdette (9:14.0).
Levi Tenney (10:09.0) and Daniel Lipscomb (9:36.8) also competed for the Tiger boys.
"Our teams showed a lot of grit and determination for their first showing," said EHS assistant coach Todd Price. "Their hard work is starting to pay off and I can't wait to see what we do next week."
Elkins returns to racing Saturday night at Cabell Midland's "XC Festival Under the Lights." The junior varsity high school girls race kicks off at 7:20 p.m. and high school action continues until the boys compete in the AAA/AAAA division at 10:30 p.m.
