Mountaineers will have new faces on the line

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia lost 41-10 to Kansas in an ugly game. Added on top of the beatdown, WVU had a lot of players injured.

During the game, center Landen Livingston went down and couldn’t get back up. He eventually was helped to the sideline, but was out for the remainder of the game.

Livingston was a focal point of the offensive line. He was a leader and went to Big 12 Media Days for WVU. Rodriguez picked Livingston because he was a good representative of the school and would probably start this season.

“Landen was actually playing pretty good football all year,” Rodriguez said. “It’s not long-term with Landen. He’s a tough guy, so he’ll fight to get back as soon as he can.”

Before WVU’s matchup with Utah, Rodriguez talked in his opening statement and provided an update on Livingston’s status.

“Landen Livingston, he got hurt in the game,” Rodriguez said. “You probably saw. He’s questionable.”

On Wednesday’s availability report, Livingston was listed as doubtful, so it doesn’t look like he’ll play. If he does, he’ll probably be limited.

Eastern Michigan transfer Carson Lee subbed in for Livingston the remainder of the game, and is in line to start if Livingston can’t go.

“[Lee]’s OK,” Rodriguez said. “He got out there and competed a little bit. Snaps were pretty good for the most part.”

Rodriguez continued and mentioned right tackle Ty’Kieast Crawford and right guard Kimo Makane’Ole are both banged up, but the two weren’t on the injury report.

Younger players will have to step up. According to the depth chart, Texas transfer Malik Agbo is the next man up at right tackle, and redshirt freshman Oklahoma transfer Josh Aisosa would be at right guard.

Those two could fill in, but younger players, who are deeper on the depth chart, will also get some snaps. Rodriguez said Tuesday and Wednesday’s practices are going to be crucial to figure out who can fill in.

“There are going to be more opportunities this week in practice to get reps for some guys in practice,” Rodriguez said. “Kind of show us if they’re ready to get regular reps. That’s why this week is going to be a big week.”

Rodriguez did add another young offensive lineman to the roster. Another “waiver wire” add, as he calls them. Freshman lineman Ethan Chill was added to the roster. Chill probably won’t play this season and will be a work in progress for the future, but something to note.

“We have a couple young offensive linemen that physically we think are able to do the job,” Rodriguez said. “That may have been a backup role, and may be thrust into an opportunity.”

Even before all the injuries, the offensive line struggled. There was a play against Kansas in the red zone, where it looked like there was a miscommunication and the right guard doubled the nose, leaving a free path to quarterback Nicco Marchiol. The offensive line has allowed the 16th-most sacks in the FBS.

Now, with the injuries, it’s not a recipe for success. Add that on top of Utah’s defensive line is one of the best in the conference. Utah defensive lineman John Henry Daley leads the Big 12 with six sacks, and the Utah DC will definitely be lining him up on that right side of the O-line.

Rodriguez could be throwing some of them right into the fire, but there’s only one way to learn.

“Going against Utah is probably not the best thing,” Rodriguez said. “They’re going to be one of the best fronts in the face all year. But it is what it is.”
