PHILIPPI — A dominating performance on both sides of the ball in the second half propelled Class AA, No. 11 Philip Barbour to a 37-14 win over Class AAA, No. 6 Elkins Friday night in front of a packed homecoming crowd assembled at George Byrer Field at BC Bank Park.

It was the first loss of the season for the Tigers, who led 14-12 at halftime but were held scoreless over the final two quarters by an attacking Colt defense, which limited Elkins to season lows in both points and total yardage.

Philip Barbour, meanwhile, set the tone of the second half on its first offensive play from scrimmage as Landyn Carpenter busted loose for a 58-yard score to give the Colts the lead for good at 18-14.

Malachi Poling added a pair of receiving touchdowns for the hosts in the second half, including taking a short pass and racing 77 yards.

Each team scored on their opening possessions of the evening, with Logan Beam going in for a 2-yard score and Philip Barbour answering with a 38-yard rumble by Carpenter.

Elkins’ Jaden Hatfield breaks free for a 30-yard touchdown Friday night against Philip Barbour.

Robbie Jones then found Poling from 27-yards out with 18 ticks left in the first quarter to give the Colts a 12-7 lead after the failed two-point conversion attempt.

Jaden Hatfield put the Tigers back in front when he busted loose for a 30-yard score with 9 minutes left in the opening half.

Carpenter had 186 yards rushing on the night, while Cam Bennett added 53 and a TD and Jones 107 yards through the air.

Elkins, meanwhile, was limited to less than 200 yards of offense. Hatfield led the way with 91 yards on the ground and Beam finished with 82.

The Tigers (4-1) will host Grafton at 7 p.m. Thursday for a special Mountain State Forest Festival matchup.

The Colts (3-2) entertain South Harrison at 7 p.m. next Friday.
