Tigers host Moorefield in first-ever meeting

ELKINS — For the first team in school history, Elkins will battle Moorefield in football this evening at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers are coming off a 54-21 win at Lincoln last Friday behind a potent running attack from Logan Beam, Jaden Hatfield and Seth Robinson.

Robinson led the way with 148 yards on 15 totes, while Hatfield had 145 yards on 16 attempts with a pair of touchdowns and Beam 130 yards on 23 tries and finding the end zone five times.

It was only the second time in school history three runners went over 100 yards rushing in one game and first EHS win in an opener since 2018.

The Yellow Jackets dropped a 34-10 decision to visiting and defending Class AA state champion Frankfort to open the season.

Caleb Flinn had 78 yards rushing in the loss and Oliver Crites a touchdown run.

Quarterback Brock Linville directs the offense.

In other action this evening, Philip Barbour visits Buckhannon-Upshur and Tucker County entertains Tygarts Valley.

The Colts enter Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium with a 1-0 mark after posting a 23-0 win at Grafton last Friday.

Junior running back Landyn Carpenter rushed for 80 yards, while the defense was led by senior all-state linebacker Tyler Vance, who had 25 total tackles, 3.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss.

Vance also returned a blocked punt for a score.

Sophomore quarterback Robbie Jones had a TD pass to Malachi Poling and ran for another.

The Bucs, meanwhile, look to regroup from a 62-14 setback to defending Class AAA state champion Bridgeport.

Dawson Tenney and Xavier Robinette both saw time at quarterback in the loss, with Tenney hauling in an 82-yard touchdown pass.

Robinette threw for 143 yards and two scores and Tenney added 49 through the air.

Jacob Frye had four receptions for 101 yards and a score.

Tygarts Valley and Tucker County enter their contest at R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field at Class of 1984 Alumni Stadium with 1-0 marks.

The Bulldogs used four touchdowns and 180 yards rushing from senior Jacob Wamsley in his high school football debut in a 54-13 home win over Valley-Wetzel.

Quarterback Austin Gear added 90 yards on the ground and a score and Noah McAtee a 39-yard score.

Junior quarterback Lucas Barb, filling in for injured starter Sam Marks, had four touchdown passes, three to senior Reid Kisamore, in the Mountain Lions’ 40-7 victory at Pocahontas County last Friday.

Kisamore ended the evening with 177 yards receiving.

Junior Cade Rapp led the ground game with 65 yards rushing and also collected eight tackles to lead the defensive effort.
