WVU’s Marchiol questionable for Saturday’s contest

MORGANTOWN — On Sunday, Nicco Marchiol came to Rich Rodriguez’s office. Marchiol told Rodriguez his foot had some mid-foot pain that was bothering him for a while now. Rodriguez wanted him to take care of it, so Marchiol went to his specialist in Colorado, who he saw on Tuesday.

“He’s going to be questionable as well,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez doesn’t know if he’ll be ready and back to play against Utah. Rodriguez meets with his trainer every morning with an injury report and that’ll decide whether or not he plays.

Marchiol’s started in all four games this season and had his ups and downs. He didn’t play too hot against Ohio and Kansas, but then led the Mountaineers to a comeback win in the Backyard Brawl over Pitt. He’s thrown for 720 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Despite being benched, Rodriguez thinks he’s the best thrower on the team.

Luckily for Rodriguez, he’s played five quarterbacks this season that he still reps in practice. Starting Tuesday, Rodriguez said all of them will get a chance to start against Utah and the fourth and fifth guy will have even more reps.

“All four quarterbacks are going to get reps all week,” Rodriguez said. “Then we’ll see. We’ll figure it out from there.”

Quarterback Jaylen Henderson seems most likely to be the starter. He’s usually the second quarterback in when Marchiol struggles. Henderson led the Mountaineers to their only touchdown against Kansas, mainly using his legs. Henderson hasn’t thrown the ball too effectively so far.

Then, there’s true freshman Scotty Fox Jr. He’s the most electric quarterback and the future of the Mountaineers, but he makes rookie mistakes. Fox scored on his first drive against Pitt and then proceeded to throw two interceptions on the next two drives. He’s still a work in progress.

Khalil Wilkins also saw action against Kansas and ran the ball efficiently, but again, hasn’t shown much passing. Charlotte transfer Max Brown was banged up in the first game and hasn’t played a snap yet this season.

Most of them seem more like runners, but Rodriguez said all his quarterback are capable of throwing the ball.

“All of them can make throws,” Rodriguez said. “It’s a matter of seeing and going to the right guy at the right time.”

The first injury report for WVU-Utah will be released on Wednesday night at 10 p.m. That’ll be the next update on whether or not Marchiol plays.

Starting at $3.92/week.
