Bucs get past Minutemen for first win of season

TENNERTON — Dawson Tenney rushed for 177 yards and a score as Buckhannon-Upshur claimed a 10-7 win over Lewis County on homecoming Friday night at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
It was the first win for the Bucs since 2023 and halted a 16-game losing skid. Their first five games of this season have came to teams currently ranked in the top 10 in their respective classes.
B-U took a 3-0 lead on Aiden Snyder’s 22-yard field goal in the first quarter but trailed 7-3 at halftime after the Minutemen scored on Isaac Pickens’ 5-yard run in the second quarter.
Tenney’s 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put the Bucs in the lead for good as the defense held Lewis County off the board over the final two quarters.
Tenney also completed 11 of 23 passes for 123 yards.
Jacob Frey nabbed five receptions for 76 yards.
Garrett Moats rushed for 126 yards on 14 totes to lead the Minutemen, who dropped to 1-5 and host North Marion on Friday.
B-U is now 1-5 and will visit East Fairmont on the same night.
Moorefield 40, Tucker County 28
MOOREFIELD — Oliver Crites rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns as Moorefield knocked off Class A, No. 7 Tucker County, 40-28, in front of the homecoming crowd assembled Friday evening in Potomac Valley Conference action.
Caleb Flinn led the Yellow Jackets with 122 yards rushing and also had a touchdown.
Quarterback Brock Linville also had a pair of rushing scores.
Reid Kisamore had three touchdown receptions for the Mountain Lions, including a 52-yard pass from Sam Marks.
Cade Rapp added a 14-yard touchdown catch.
Moorefield led 24-14 at halftime and extended the lead to 32-14 on Crites’ 2-yard run early into the third quarter.
The Mountain Lions dropped to 5-2 on the season and return to action Friday evening at Southern (Md.).
It was the first victory of the season for the Yellow Jackets who are now 1-5 and travel to Class A, No. 13 East Hardy on Friday for another league contest.
