Colts erupt in third to coast past Minutemen

WESTON — Landyn Carpenter had four rushing touchdowns as Class AA, No. 4 Philip Barbour erupted in the third quarter to cruise to a 48-15 win over Lewis County Friday night in Big 10 Conference action.

The Colts trailed late in the first half before Carpenter’s TD run gave them a 14-7 lead at the intermission.

The momentum carried over into the second half in a big way for Philip Barbour as Cam Bennett’s 60-yard scoring run out of the “Wildcat” formation set the tone for the remainder of the contest.

Ayden Thorne tacked on the conversion kick.

Bennett then found Malachi Poling for a 21-yard connection to extend the lead to 28-7.

Carpenter followed with scoring runs of 13 and 15 inside of 5 minutes left in the third quarter to treat the Colts to a 42-7 advantage heading into the final frame.

Dayton Morrison had a TD run in the fourth canto for Philip Barbour and Leo Jones a 1-yard score for the Minutemen.

Carpenter, who had two touchdown runs in the first half, finished with 177 yards on the ground on 21 totes, while Bennett added 169.

Jones led Lewis County with 43 yards on the ground. Garrett Moats had a scoring reception in the first half.

The Colts (6-2) return home next Friday to battle East Fairmont, while the Minutemen (1-7) visit Berkeley Springs on the same evening.
