Colts, Mountain Lions set for key contests

ELKINS — Philip Barbour and Tucker County host key games this evening in regards to the playoffs for Week 10 of the high school football season.
The Colts (6-2) find themselves fourth in the WVSSAC, Class AA playoff ratings and will battle East Fairmont at George Byrer Field at Freedom Bank Park.
Junior Landyn Carpenter rumbled for 177 yards and four touchdowns in Philip Barbour’s 48-15 win last week at Lewis County.
Senior Cam Bennett added 169 yards on the ground — primarily out of the “Wildcat” formation.
Senior receiver Malachi Poling also had a TD reception.
Sophomore quarterback Robbie Jones and senior receiver Patrick Webster are other offensive weapons for the Colts, while senior linebacker Tyler Vance spearheads the defense.
The Bees enter the contest 3-5 and need a victory to remain the Class AAA playoff chase. They are 19th in this week’s ratings.
East Fairmont has been idle since defeating Buckhannon-Upshur, 34-31, two weeks ago.
Sophomore quarterback Logan Eakle had three touchdown passes in the high-scoring affair, including a pair to sophomore Jaxson Heskett, while senior Gavin Murphey had the other.
Senior Adrian Fleming led the ground game with over 100 yards rushing and a pair of scores.
At R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field at Class of 1984 Alumni Stadium in Parsons, Tucker County and Petersburg look to snap losing skids.
Both squads were idle last week.
The Class A, 11th-rated Mountain Lions (5-3) dropped a verdict at Moorefield in their last action on the field.
Quarterback Sam Marks and receivers Reid Kisamore, Lucas Barb and Keelyn Eichelberger fuel the passing game. Cade Rapp anchors the ground attack.
The Class AA, 11th-rated Vikings (5-3) lost at top-ranked Frankfort two weeks ago for their third straight loss — all coming against teams rated in the Top 6 in double-A.
Sophomore quarterback Payton Metheny, senior Kaleb Kuhn, sophomore Evan Tawney and senior Lukas Wolford lead Petersburg’s offensive attack.
Other games on tap for this evening include Preston at Buckhannon-Upshur and Pocahontas County at Tygarts Valley.
The Bucs (1-7) lost a 35-32 verdict to Lincoln last Friday. They have lost their last two games by a combined total of six points.
Senior quarterback Dawson Tenney rushing for 152 yards and three scores and passing for an additional 158 yards and a touchdown against the Cougars.
Jacob Frye had six catches for 95 yards in the setback, while Chance Morgan four receptions for 31 yards and Alex Wamsley a two-yard score.
The Knights (1-7) are coming off a 49-13 setback to University last week.
Senior quarterback Slaton Manko and senior receiver Aiden Schmidl are the top offensive weapons for Preston.
Both teams remain in in the Class AAAA playoff hunt as B-U is 18th in the latest ratings and the Knights are 17th.
The top 16 teams in each class qualify for the playoffs.
At Bulldog Field in Mill Creek, Tygarts Valley (2-6) and Pocahontas County (1-7) both seek to end three-game losing skids.
Tygarts Valley was idle last week and fell to Ritchie County, 26-12, in its last outing two weeks ago.
Senior quarterback Austin Gear had a pair of touchdown passes to Preston Smith in the loss.
The Warriors are coming off a 55-26 setback at East Hardy last Friday.
Junior Griffin Taylor, who had an 80-yard TD run in the loss the Cougars, senior Haydon Moore and junior Morgan Beverage are names to watch for in Pocahontas County’s offensive attack.
