Lady Hornets outlast Little Lady Bucs in tourney play
BRIDGEPORT –The Elkins Middle School girls soccer team defeated Buckhannon-Upshur in penalty kicks Monday night in Mid-Mountain Athletic Conference tournament play.
The match was deadlocked 1-1 heading into the shootout.
Caitlynn Dempsey, Kate Terry and Lovelyn Tierney converted penalty kicks for EMS.
Claire Bennett was solid in the goal for the Lady Hornets and recorded two saves in the shootout.
The Little Lady Bucs scored 11 minutes into the first half to take the early lead.
A minute later, Kendall Ward scored off a pass from Norah Lee to tie the game.
“We couldn’t be more proud of the way this team came together tonight,” EMS coach Andrew Roidt said. “For multiple reasons, players had to step up and play a different role than they were used to.
“They did so and played with an incredible amount of effort and energy.”
The Lady Hornets are now 8-4-2 on the season and will travel to Bridgeport in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The title game is set for Saturday.
