Tiger harriers win third straight Big 10 crown

TENNERTON — Elkins High School’s Emilia Tenney and Trevor George both earned Big 10 “Runner of the Year” honors by way of first place individual finishes at Thursday’s conference championships, which were hosted by Buckhannon-Upshur High School.

Tenney spent most of the race locked into a tight battle with Bridgeport’s Aria Selario and Lady Tiger teammate Julia Biola.

In the end, Tenney used strong second-half surges to slip away from Selario in a time of 19:28.

Selario finished second (19:38) and Biola third (19:43).

In addition to Tenney and Biola, Molly McFadden (11th, 21:29) rounded out a trio of first-team all-conference for EHS by placing in the Top 11 individually. Mya Mendelson (30th, 23:45) and Haley Kelley (37th, 24:29) also scored for the Lady Tigers, which took third as a team with 80 points.

Bridgeport won the girls team title with 51 points. Other complete girls teams included Preston (69), Fairmont Senior (106), B-U (129), Lincoln (135), Grafton (157) East Fairmont (175) and North Marion (231).

Gwendolyn Rogosky placed 13th with an effort of 21:50 to lead the Lady Bucs, while Philip Barbour’s Kayla Baker finished 34th (24:09).

For the EHS boys, George crossed the line first in a time of 16:24.

Teamamate Josh Bodkins was third (17:02) in earning first-team all-conference honors.

George took control of the race early and cruised to a seemingly-relaxed victory, well ahead of Bridgeport’s Troy Zorrick, who as second in a time of 16:57.

Bodkins, meanwhile, found himself engrossed in a far-tighter battle, finding himself in fifth place heading into the race’s home stretch, Bodkins poured on an impressive kick to gap Fairmont Senior’s Landon Jones (4th, 17:02) and B-U’s Alex Sappey (5th, 17:04).

Elkins’ Preston Nixon (13th, 17:51) and Treven Schaefer (14th, 17:52) also earned second-team all-conference honors by placing in the Top 20 individually. Ben Tenney (22nd, 18:19) also contributed to the Tigers winning tally of 53 points.

It marked the third consecutive year the Elkins boys have won the Big 10 team title, easily outpacing runner-up Grafton’s 79 points.

Other complete boys teams included Bridgeport (94), Fairmont Senior (103), Lincoln (108), East Fairmont (124), B-U (133), Lewis County (240), North Marion (255) and Robert C. Byrd (293).

Jacob Burner placed 30th (19:12) for the Colts.

“We haven’t raced in a while, so this was a tune-up before we head into regionals,” said EHS coach Scott Biola. “They should be proud of themselves, but we know the work is not done.”

Elkins returns to action on Oct. 25 at Preston High School for the Class AAA Region II Championships. The girls race starts at 1 p.m., with the boys set to follow at 1:45 p.m.

B-U will also be in action that day, traveling to Huntington High School for the Class AAAA South Region Championships.

The state meet will be held Nov. 1 at Cabell Midland High School in Ona.
