PHILIPPI — Philip Barbour turned in one of the most dominating performances in school history on Friday night to punch its ticket to the Class AA state semifinals.

The third-seeded Colts (10-2) took advantage of five first-half turnovers from No. 11 Clay County in rolling to a 69-7 win in front of the large crowd assembled at George Byrer Field at Freedom Bank Park.

It was a school record for points scored for Philip Barbour in its first-ever quarterfinal home game.

The Colts will now travel to No. 2 seed Bluefield next Friday or Saturday in their first-ever semifinal appearance on the gridiron.

Friday’s outcome was decided early, as coach Nick Mayle’s squad led 28-0 after one quarter and carried an insurmountable 56-0 advantage into the halftime break.

As the rain started to fall freely, so did the Panther turnovers.

Leading 14-0 after a Landyn Carpenter touchdown run and a 47-yard connection from Robbie Jones to Malachi Poling, a Jones fumble recovery near midfield was followed by a 47-yard scamper by Carpenter to extend the lead to 21-0 with 3:05 still left in the first quarter.

Linebacker Tyler Vance then got into the act, intercepting a Clay County pass to set up Jones’ 21-yard strike to Poling.

Early into the second quarter, Mason Jones picked up a Panther fumble and rumbled to the Clay County 9-yard line.

Two plays later, Robbie Jones busted loose on an 11-yard quarterback run, making it 35-0.

The Colt defense, which limited the high-scoring Panthers to just 125 yards of total offense, then accounted for two of the next three scores, with Aidan Phillips and Kent Rowan returning fumbles for scores.

A pair of Philip Barbour linemen got into the scoring column on the evening as well as Owen Johnson had a TD run late in the first half and Malachi Cross added a second-half scoring plunge.

Mason Jones tacked on a 38-yard TD run early into the third canto.

The Colts piled up over 450 yard of total offense.

Carpenter had 150 yards rushing, followed by Mason Jones with 78 and Robbie Jones with 62. Freshman Ayden Thorne was 9 of 10 on conversion kicks.

Brody Scarbro led Clay County 68 yards rushing and a TD run late in the fourth quarter.
