Moore leads Warriors to victory over Bulldogs, 41-16

MILL CREEK — Haydon Moore ran for 167 yards and four touchdowns as Pocahontas County won the Battle of Cheat Mountain with a 41-16 victory over Tygarts Valley Friday night at Bulldog Field.

The Warriors (2-7) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after finding the end zone on the games’ opening possession and extended the lead to 14-0 with 2:52 remaining in the opening quarter when Moore scored his first touchdown on an 11-yard run.

The Bulldogs (2-7) cut the visitors’ lead to 14-8 just before the end of the first quarter when Austin Gear raced in for a 70-yard touchdown. Adam Woods ran in the two-point conversion.

With 9:43 remaining in the first half the visitors extend the deficit to 21-8 when Moore rumbled in for a 3-yard score.

Pocahontas County pushed the lead to 27-8 just before the half when Moore scored his third touchdown of the game on a 7-yard run.

The Warriors forged ahead 33-8 when Moore scored again on a 2-yard run with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter.

Griffin Taylor completed a 21-yard scoring strike to Anthony Bennett to push Pocahontas County’s lead to 41-8 with just under nine minutes to play.

Tygarts Valley capped off the scoring late in regulation when Gear, who finished the game with 118 yards rushing, plunged in for a 1-yard score with 27 seconds remaining. Jamal Nesbitt ran in the two-point conversion.

The Bulldogs will close out the season next Friday when they entertain Montcalm.

Pocahontas County will host Webster County the same evening.
