Tigers, Bucs, Colts and Tucker earn playoff spots

ELKINS — Area teams will represent all four classes in the high school state playoffs set to get underway on Friday evening.

After garnering a win over Preston, Elkins (7-3) finished 11th in Class AAA and will travel to No. 6 Spring Valley (7-3) at 4 p.m. Saturday in the opening round.

It will be the first-ever meeting between the schools in football.

The other opening-round matchups in triple-A include No. 16 PikeView (7-3) at No. 1 Bridgeport (10-0), No. 15 Hampshire (6-4) at No. 2 Princeton (10-0), No. 14 Robert C. Byrd (5-5) at No. 3 Fairmont Senior (8-2), No. 13 Keyser (7-3) at No. 4 North Marion (9-1), No. 12 Capital (5-5) at No. 5 Nitro (9-1), No. 10 Winfield (7-3) at No. 7 Herbert Hoover (8-2) and No. 9 Chapmanville (10-0) at No. 8 Greenbrier East (6-4).

Buckhannon-Upshur (2-8) landed a spot in Class AAAA as the 16th seed and will visit top-seed Morgantown (9-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

The schools met last season, with the Mohigans prevailing, 49-6.

Other Class AAAA first-round matchups are No. 15 Hedgesville (2-8) at No. 2 Huntington (8-2), No. 14 Parkersburg South (3-7) at No. 3 Martinsburg (8-2), No. 13 Washington (3-7) at No. 4 Jefferson (6-4), No. 12 Oak Hill (5-5) at No. 5 George Washington (8-2), No. 11 Woodrow Wilson (5-5) at No. 6 Wheeling Park (6-4, No. 10 Parkersburg (5-5) at No. 7 University (7-3) and No. 9 Musselman (4-6) at No. 8 Spring Mills (6-4).

Friday’s victory over Lincoln moved Philip Barbour from fourth to third in the final Class AA ratings.

The Colts (8-2) have won six straight games and will host No. 14 South Harrison (6-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in a rematch from earlier this season — a 49-22 Philip Barbour victory.

Petersburg, meanwhile, is the 10th seed and will visit Midland Trail (9-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Vikings are 7-3 and defeated East Hardy, 38-31, this past Friday.

The remaining opening-round Class AA tilts include No. 16 Williamstown (5-5) at No. 1 Frankfort (10-0), No. 15 Oak Glen (7-3) at No. 2 Bluefield (8-2), No. 13 Lincoln (4-6) at No. 4 Independence (9-1), No. 12 Logan (8-2) at No. 5 Doddridge County (10-0), No. 11 Clay County (7-3) at No. 6 Roane County (9-1) and No. 9 James Monroe (7-3) at No. 8 Mingo Central (8-2).

In Class A, Tucker County (6-4) not only halted a three-game losing skid in Friday’s 28-21 victory over then-No. 13 Hampshire, but secured the eighth seed and home playoff game against No. 9 Tug Valley (6-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The schools, who have developed quite a rivalry in football and basketball over the past several years, last met on the gridiron two year ago, with the Mountain Lions winning, 42-0, in the state quarterfinals.

Tug Valley has defeated Tucker County in the last two state title games in boys basketball.

Pendleton County and East Hardy also qualified for the Class A playoffs.

The Wildcats (8-2) are the fourth seed host No. 13 Greenbrier West (4-6) at 7 p.m. Friday and the 12th-seeded Cougars (5-5) visit No. 5 Sherman on the same evening.

The other Class A first-round contests include No. 16 Tolsia (3-7) at No. 1 Wheeling Central Catholic (6-2), No. 15 Man (3-7) at No. 2 Wahama (10-0, No. 14 Ritchie County (4-6) at No. 3 Clay-Battelle (9-1), No. 11 Wirt County (7-3) at No. 6 St. Marys (8-2) and No. 10 Meadow Bridge (7-3) at No. 7 Cameron (6-3).
