HUNTINGTON — The Elkins High football team put up a valiant effort in Saturday’s setback to Spring Valley.
But the sixth-seeded Timberwolves never allowed the 11th-seeded Tigers a chance for a late comeback by keeping control of the ball the final 6 minutes of regulation to escape with a hard-fought 13-10 victory and advance to the Class AAA quarterfinals.
All the game’s points were scored over the first two quarters.
It appeared a high-scoring game was in the works, however, when Spring Valley found the end zone just 2 minutes into the contest on a 2-yard run by Miguel Cain that was set up by a partially-blocked punt on a high snap that allowed the hosts to start the drive on the EHS 8-yard line.
Elkins answered on its next series when junior Seth Robinson busted loose for a 28-yard score to tie the game at 7-7 with 8 minutes left in the opening quarter.
A 41-yard run by Jaden Hatfield moved to ball to the 28, with Robinson scoring on the following play from scrimmage.
The Timberwolves added a 16-yard TD run by Caiden Lovejoy in the second quarter, while the Tigers countered with a 25-yard field goal by Dyer Barger with 3:11 left in the first half.
The Tigers started their final possession of the night from the Spring Valley 32-yard line with 9 minutes left to play.
A 35-yard scamper by Robinson moved the ball near the Timberwolve 30-yard line, but three straight negative plays moved the ball back to midfield, forcing a punt.
Spring Valley took over at its own 20 with 6:37 left to play and was able to kill the remainder of the game clock.
The Tigers won the turnover battle, 3-0, and stepped up defensively in the fourth quarter with a key stand to give the offense an opportunity on its last possession of the game.
Elkins finished the season with a 7-4 record and had two backs go over 1,000 yards for the season in Robinson and senior Logan Beam.
The Timberwolves (8-3) will host another Big 10 Conference member — Robert C. Byrd — at 7 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfinals.
