BUCKHANNON -- Top-seed West Virginia Wesleyan battled throughout but ultimately fell to West Virginia State 3-0 (19-25, 28-30, 19-25) in the semifinals of the Mountain East Conference Tournament Friday evening inside Rockefeller Center.
The loss ended the Bobcats' season at 20-9 overall, culminating a standout campaign that featured an 11-4 MEC record, the No. 1 seed in the postseason, and the program's deepest tournament push in several years.
Philip Barbour products were on full display in Friday's semifinal matchup.
Emily Denison had 11 kills, nine digs, four total blocks and 14 points for Wesleyan, while freshman MacKenna Halfin added 12 kills, five digs, three total blocks and 14 points.
Alyssa Hill, meanwhile, led State with 16 kills, two digs, one block and 16.5 points in the victory.
Bhrooke Axe added six kills and three blocks and Emonie Fennell seven kills for the Bobcats in the loss.
Wesleyan had defeated Glenville State, 3-1, in Thursday's quarterfinals and State handed Fairmont State a 3-1 setback.
State advances to face the University of Charleston at 6 p.m. today in the championship match at Rockefeller Center.
Charleston moved on with a 3-1 victory over Concord in Friday's second semifinal match.
In Thursday's other quarterfinal tilts, Charleston defeated Wheeling, 3-2, and Concord got past West Liberty, 3-2
