FAIRMONT -- Darrell Claybrook fired in 27 points to lead Class AAA, No. 4 Fairmont Senior to an 80-50 win over Elkins on Wednesday night.
It was the season opener for the Tigers, who've had games against Tucker County and Hampshire postponed due to the weather.
Breaking in four new starters, Elkins fell behind 19-11 after one quarter and 37-22 at the intermission break.
The Polar Bears (2-0) then outscored the Tigers, 23-14, in the third frame to build a 60-36 advantage entering the final canto.
Junior Dreyton Boggs had 22 points, including three treys, to lead Elkins.
Senior Landon Shreve, who is the returning starter, added 14 points.
Fairmont Senior netted 10 shots from beyond the arc, with Landon Morris hitting four to finish with 16 points.
Claybrook, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, had three treys as part of his game-high point total.
Cam Ferguson also reached double figures in the win with 13 points.
The Tigers will open the home season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when Class A, No. 2 Tucker County visits Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium in a make-up contest.
"This was certainly a tough test to start the season and we have another one on Saturday," Elkins coach Amrit Rayfield said.
The Polar Bears visit top-ranked and defending Class AAA state champion Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m. Friday for a Big 10 showdown.
