Mountain Lions remain second in coaches poll

Elkins High School wrestlers compete at Greenbrier East

ELKINS -- The Tucker County boys are second in the West Virginia Schools Athletic Coaches Association (WVSACA) first regular-season Class A basketball poll released on Monday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions, who were second in the preseason poll as well, dropped a 62-58 overtime decision at Mountain Ridge (Md.) to open the season last Friday.

They are slated to host regional foe Pendleton County at 1 p.m. on Friday. The Wildcats are ranked 10th.

Tug Valley, which had defeated Tucker County in the last two state title games, is first.

The Mountain Lions' game at Elkins slated for Monday night, meanwhile, has been postponed until this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Greater Beckley Christian is third, followed by St. Joseph Central and Ritchie County and Summit Christian -- tied for fifth.

East Hardy is seventh.

Wheeling Central tops the Class AA poll.

Wyoming East, Bluefield, Williamstown and Doddridge County round out the top five.

Defending state champion and Big 10 Conference member Bridgeport is first in Class AAA.

Capital, South Charleston, Fairmont Senior and Nitro comprise the top five.

In the quad-A, George Washington, Spring Mills, Morgantown, Parkersburg South and University are the top five.

EHS competes at event

LEWISBURG -- The Elkins High School wrestling team competed in the Morse Reece Memorial Duals Saturday at Greenbrier East High School.

The Tigers, who were shorthanded due to illness, dropped matches to Greenbrier East (46-24), Lord Botetourt (Va.) (51-23) and Woodrow Wilson (48-30).

They defeated St. Albans, 36-36, winning on criteria.

Record for Elkins in the tournament included Scott Twigg 2-2 (106 pounds), Brennan Daniels 4-0 (113), Tucker Twigg 3-1 (144), Logan Stewart 2-2 (157), Noah Reel 0-4 (165), Anthony Isabell 2-2 (175), Aidan Vasquez 2-2 (heavyweight) and Isaac Workman 4-0 (heavyweight).

The Tigers will travel to Morgantown at 6 p.m. on Wednesday to battle the host Mohigans and Philip Barbour.
