Clemson tight end commits to WVU

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia addressed the tight end need Sunday night in the transfer portal.

Veteran Clemson tight end Josh Sapp has reportedly committed to the Mountaineers, according to On3. Sapp is the first tight end transfer for WVU this offseason.

Sapp’s played a lot of college football at the Power Four level. He’s played for the Tigers for four years, redshirting his first season. In Year 2, Sapp had seven receptions for 60 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games. He didn’t have the biggest 2024 with just six catches for 63 yards, but he played 109 offensive snaps over 13 games again.

Sapp’s biggest season came in 2025. He didn’t have crazy numbers in the rough season for Clemson, but he made one start and hauled in 11 passes for 150 yards in 267 offensive snaps over 13 appearances.

Sapp’s not the biggest tight end at 6-foot-2, but the Mountaineers needed at least one tight end. WVU’s best tight end in 2025, Grayson Barnes, has run out of eligibility. The Mountaineers do have tight end Ryan Ward coming back, but they needed a tight end with some experience, and Sapp should provide that.

WVU uses tight ends quite a bit. The Mountaineers are a run-heavy team that’ll use tight ends to block, but also to catch a pass or two on long third downs. WVU has the tight ends to play a lot of consecutive snaps, too, because the tempo offense doesn’t allow substitutions. Sapp, with some conditioning, is a versatile tight end who should fit in.

WVU is getting up there in transfer portal additions. This is the first tight end added, but the Mountaineers have gained 26 new players from the portal, according to 247Sports
