EHS to host Big 10 Wrestling Championships on Saturday

ELKINS — Elkins High School will host the Big 10 Conference Wrestling Championships Saturday at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The event is slated to begin at 9 a.m.

Along with the host Tigers, teams scheduled to compete included Buckhannon-Upshur, Philip Barbour, Bridgeport, Grafton, Lewis County, Lincoln, Robert C. Byrd, Fairmont Senior, East Fairmont, North Marion and Preston.

Fairmont Senior is the defending league champions, racking up 245 points in last year’s event, followed by Preston, East Fairmont, Bridgeport and Lewis County to comprise the top five.

Bridgeport is ranked sixth in the latest Division I West Virginia Coaches Association/wvmat.com poll, while East Fairmont sets at No. 8 in Division II.

Several wrestlers ranked top 10 individually in the Division I poll will take part in Saturday’s tournament, including Buckhannon-Upshur’s Jeremy Jett (126 pounds), Bridgeport’s Evan Root (106), Max Smith (113), T.J. Bearden (120), Tyler Mason (138), Kaleb Ice (150), John Knight (165) and Eli Knight (215), Fairmont Senior’s Dominick Frisenda, Jimmy Hershman (144) and King Abercrombie (285) and Preston’s Caleb Dobbins (175), William Lilly (138) and Levi Jennings (132).

Philip Barbour’s Malachi Cross is ranked fourth at 285-pounds in Division II, while East Fairmont’s Haydyn Spitznogle is first at 126 and teammate Tony Preolitti first at 175.

RCB’s Christian Davis (138), East Fairmont’s Blake Ringer (144), Lewis County’s Landon Bush (150), East Fairmont’s Louis Diaz (190) and North Marion’s Toby Michael (190) and Gavin Floyd (285) also appear among the top 10.

During the recent Viking Smash held at Petersburg, Elkins had a strong showing from Tucker Twigg, who went 10-0 and captured the title in the 144-pound class.

Isaac Workman went 9-1 at 285 to finish second, Chiron Wing placed third with an 8-2 mark at 190 and Anthony Isabell was third at 175, going 7-3.

The Elkins High football team will be serving breakfast at the tournament.

The breakfast will take place at the Elkins High School cafeteria.

The cost of the “buffet style” breakfast is $10 a plate. The food will consist of biscuits and gravy, eggs, pancakes and sausage or bacon.

Drinks include coffee, water and orange juice.

Breakfast will begin at 7 a.m., and will end around 9:30 a.m., or until the food runs out.
