Girls regional action set to begin Thursday

ELKINS — With postseason action for girls basketball set to get underway around the state, the WVSACA released its final regular-season poll on Tuesday.
Philip Barbour is seventh in Class AA.
The Lady Colts are the second seed in the Region II tourney and hosts No. 7 Berkeley Springs on Friday.
Also on Friday in Region II play, No. 3 Petersburg hosts No. 6 Braxton County, No. 8 South Harrison visits top-seed Lincoln and No. 4 Moorefield entertains No. 5 Frankfort.
On Thursday, March 5, the Berkeley Springs-Philip Barbour winner faces the Braxton County-Petersburg victor and the South Harrison-Lincoln winner meets the winner between Frankfort vs. Moorefield at the site of the highest-remaining seed.
The winners of the those games advances to the state tourney.
In Class A, Tucker County is fourth and Pocahontas County seventh.
The Lady Mountain Lions, who defeated top-ranked Gilmer County last week at home, are the top seed in the Region II tournament and hosts the winner of Thursday’s contest between No. 5 Paw Paw and No. 4 Pendleton County on Wednesday, March 4, for a berth to Charleston.
Also on Thursday, No. 3 Tygarts Valley entertains No. 6 East Hardy and No. 7 Union travels to No. 2 Pocahontas County.
The winners of those games battle on March 4 for the other state berth from the region.
Meanwhile, Elkins is the fourth seed in the Class AAA, Region II tourney and entertains No. 5 Bridgeport on Thursday.
Sixth-seed Robert C. Byrd visits No. 3 Hampshire on the same evening.
The Bridgeport-EHS victor will travel to top-seed Keyser on Tuesday, March 3, and the RCB-Hampshire winner visits No. 2 Lewis County, with the winners of those game advancing to the state tournament.
Buckhannon-Upshur is the 10th seed in the Class AAAA, South Region and will travel to No, 7 Hurricane on Friday, with the winner venturing to No. 2 Parkersburg South on Wednesday, March 4.
No. 9 Oak Hill also visits No. 8 Riverside on Friday and the victor will travel to top-seed George Washington on March 4.
No. 5 Cabell Midland is at No. 4 Huntington and No. 3 Parkersburg hosts No. 6 Woodrow Wilson in the other contests on March 4.
The four winners of the March 4 tilts earn state berths.
The girls state tourney will be held March 10-14 at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
The regional pairings for the boys will be announced this week by the WVSSAC.
In this week’s WVSACA boys poll, Tucker County is seventh, East Hardy sixth and Pendleton County eighth in Class A, while B-U is eighth in Class AAAA and Petersburg eighth in double-A.
