Boys state tourney begins today

Tucker County faces Huntington St. Joseph’s in Class A quarterfinals

CHARLESTON — Sixth-seed Tucker County was set to battle No. 3 Huntington St. Joseph’s at 9:30 a.m. today at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center in Class A quarterfinal action.

The Mountain Lions, who have finished as state runner-up the past three years, cruised past Pendleton County, 65-46, in a co-regional finale to earn a spot in Charleston as junior Ethan Cummings netted 19 points.

Cayden Arnold added 16 and Carson Dearborn and Sam Marks 10 apiece.

The Irish are led by senior Grady Paynter, who is hitting for 18 points per game.

Junior Micaiah Ehirim adds 17.3 points per outing and senior Isaiah Sanders 10.6.

Fellow Potomac Valley Conference foe East Hardy joins Tucker County at states and faces No. 5 Parkersburg Catholic (21-3) at 9 p.m.

The fourth-seeded Cougars (20-4) are in the state tournament for the fourth straight year and are led in scoring by 6-foot-8 junior center Gideon Good (16.7 ppg.), Evan Hamilton (13.6 ppg.) and Mason Hamilton (11.1 ppg.)

The Crusaders are led in scoring by Luke Anderson (14 ppg.) and Preston Randolph (13.4 ppg.)

Today’s other Class A quarterfinal matchups include No. 2 Tug Valley (18-5) vs. No. 7 Ritchie County (17-6) at 1 p.m. and top-seed Greater Beckley Christian (20-2) vs. No. 8 Webster County (14-10 at 5:30 p.m.
