Tigers pound out 18 hits to defeat Irish

CLARKSBURG — Trent Stone had five RBIs to power Elkins to a 23-7 win over Notre Dame on Wednesday.

The Tigers erupted for 16 runs in the fifth inning, with Stone hitting a two-run triple, Dyer Barger a two-run triple and an RBI single and Owen Stanley, Isaac Shepler, Caden Kreps, Brady Biller, Braden Cooper and James Linger RBI singles.

Cooper earned the win in 2 1/3 innings of relief, going two runs on two hits, striking out two and walking two.

Blayne Thompson and Stone also saw time on the hill.

Elkins had 18 hits on the night as Shepler and Stone had three apiece.

The Tigers (1-1) visit Robert C. Byrd at 5:30 p.m. today.

B-U 9, Philip Barbour 6

TENNERTON — Buckhannon-Upshur plated four runs in each of the third and fifth innings to hand Philip Barbour a 9-6 setback Wednesday in Big 10 Conference play.

It was the season opener for the Bucs, who were led at the plate by Brody McDaniel and Jacob Frye with two RBIs each.

Jerin Westfall worked 3 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on no hits, fanning six and walking four.

Weldon Zirkle finished in relief, surrendering four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking two.

Landyn Carpenter was tagged with the loss. The junior went 4 1/3 innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits, fanning three and walking two.

Westfall helped his cause with a triple and double.

Parker Fincham and Slaton Harris had two RBIs each for the Colts, while Kale Wolfe was 2 for 3.

B-U will remain home at 5 p.m. today to face North Marion for a league tilt, while the Colts (2-1) will visit Big 10 foe Lewis County at 5:30 p.m. today.

Bath County 12, TV 2

HOT SPRINGS, Va. — Tygarts Valley dropped a 12-2 verdict to Bath County (Va.) on Wednesday.

Nate Hunt earned the win for the Chargers, going four innings, scattering one run on five hits and fanning five.

Owen Perdue went 4 for 4 and had five RBIs in the win.

Corbin Oldaker took the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up six runs on five hits, striking out three and walking two.

Jacob Wamsley and Adam Woods had RBIs for Tygarts Valley, which is now 2-2 and entertains Pocahontas County at 6 p.m. today.

East Hardy 13, Tucker 0

BAKER — A nine-run third inning lifted East Hardy to a 13-0 win over Tucker County Wednesday in PVC play.

Paylynn Rexrode went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Lady Cougars.

Madison Strosnider twirled a five-inning no-hitter for East Hardy, striking out 11 and walking one.

Peyton Hicks was tagged with the loss for the Lady Mountain Lions, who host Philip Barbour Friday.
