Trio of EHS wrestlers to compete in state tourney

Buckhannon-Upshur and Philip Barbour have both boys and girls participating in three-day event

HUNTINGTON -- Elkins High School will be represented by three wrestlers in the Division II portion of the state tourney set to get underway today Marshall Health Network Arena.

The three-day event begins at 6:30 p.m. with 224 matches and concludes Saturday evening for the championship matches.

Tigers competing include junior Tucker Twigg, junior Chiron Wing and sophomore Isaac Workman.

Twigg, competing in the 144-pound class, is 32-3 on the season and captured the regional title.

Twigg will face Ravenswood senior Matt Phelps (35-7) in his opening match tonight.

Wing battles Jayden Roop (26-2) of Midland Trail in his opener at 190 pounds. Wing is 30-20 on the season and placed third in the regional tourney.

Workman enters the tournament with a 30-7 mark and placed third in regionals.

His opponent this evening in the 285-pound class is Wheeling Central junior Dominic Paesani, who captured the Region I title and his 22-8 this season.

Philip Barbour senior Malachi Cross -- the Region II champion -- is also competing in the 285-pound class.

Cross, who recently committed to Glenville State for football, is 38-4 and battles Weir senior Brock Hebb (11-7) in his first match.

In the Division I portion of the tourney, Buckhannon-Upshur senior Jeremy Jett qualified at 126 pounds. He is 32-9 on the season and placed fourth in the regional tourney.

Jett's opening-round opponent this evening is St. Albans' Alonzo Long, who is 43-5 on the season and enters states as a regional champion.

The girls will take to the mat at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with the finals set for later in the evening.

Area girls competing include Buckhannon-Upshur's Angelina Winters (107), Anya Moorehead (114), Maya Garcia (145), Lylah Ketterman (165), Olivia Blonn (185) and Abby Radabaugh (235) , along with Philip Barbour's Paityn Clower (132) and Gracie Howell (152)

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Board of Directors recently voted to approve girls wrestling as a preliminary sanctioned sport beginning with the 2026-27 school year.

The decision establishes an official WVSSAC girls wrestling state championship supported by a regional qualifying format.

The girls-only championship will be conducted separately from the boys state wrestling tournament.
