Tucker renews rivalry with Tug Valley today

East Hardy battles Greater Beckley Christian in other semifinal

Gideon Good (34) had 24 points and 12 rebounds in East Hardy’s quarterfinal win over Parkersburg Catholic.

CHARLESTON — For the first time in three years, Tucker County and Tug Valley won’t be playing for a state title inside the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.

The teams have met in the past two Class A championship games, with the Panthers prevailing in both contests.

The sixth-seeded Mountain Lions (17-8) look to take a little sting off those setbacks at 11:15 a.m. today in the Class A semifinals.

Fellow Potomac Valley Conference member East Hardy, meanwhile, battles top-seed Greater Beckley Christian (21-2) in the other semifinal at 7:15 p.m.

The championship game is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Cougars (21-4) advanced to the semifinals for the third straight season after defeating No. 5 Parkersburg Catholic, 63-49, in Tuesday’s late quarterfinal game as 6-foot-8 junior center Gideon Good had 24 points and 12 rebounds.

Mason Hamilton added 15 points before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an injury.

Tucker County, which is seeking its fourth straight appearance in the state finals, knocked off No. 3 Huntington St. Joseph’s, 59-57, in Tuesday morning’s quarterfinal matchup as Carson Dearborn scored 14 points and Cayden Arnold and Mikey Mitchell added 12 apiece.

Second-seed Tug Valley, meanwhile, overcame a 12-point first-quarter deficit in rallying for a 67-61 victory over No. 7 Ritchie County.

The Panthers (19-5) were led by Braydun Ferris with 30 points, followed by Zade Rash with 17.

Tug Valley won the season series against the Mountain Lions, escaping with a 66-65 victory in Parsons at taking a 63-43 victory at home a little over a month ago.
