Brenwalt shines in Snowshoe Foundation invite

ELKINS — Marissa Brenwalt picked up 38 points, a school record, and a meet record to lead the The Elkins girls to a second-place finish in the 12-team Snowshoe Foundation Invitational held Friday at Irwin Track on the EHS campus.

The Lady Tigers tallied 134 points to winner Bridgeport’s 187.5.

Preston (82), Braxton County (64), Petersburg (63), Lewis County (42), Philip Barbour (40), Tucker County (37), Pocahontas County (16.5), Tygarts Valley (7) and Harman (5) rounded out the team scoring.

Brenwalt’s most dominant performance was her victory in the 100-meter hurdles. Her 15.00 bettered the school record (15.10) set by Mary Trochlil in 1987 and established a new meet record.

Brenwalt also picked up first- place finishes in the high jump (5-2) and 300 hurdles (48.65) and took second in the long jump (16-2).

Elkins High’s middle distance duo of Julia Biola and Emilia Tenney also established meet records with respective first place finishes in the 800- (2:20) and 1,600- (5:07) meter runs.

“It’s always great to see meet records get broken,” said EHS coach Adam Romano. “I am proud of these kids and can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds.”

Tucker County’s Lela Wright was second in the 100-meter dash (12.95) and fourth in the 200 (27.29).

The EHS boys finished in second with 162 points and made a clean sweep of the middle distance events, with Josh Bodkins setting a meet record in the 800 (2:00), Trevor George winning the 1,600 (4:31) and Ben Tenney capturing the 3,200 (10:13).

Bodkins and Tenney joined forces with Preston Nixon and Dylan Fortney to also take first in the 4×800 relay (8:34).

The Tigers’ 4×200 squad of Elias Jones, Jaden Hatfield, Lucian Breault and Randal Marks also brought home a win in 1:35.01.

In the field events, Elkins also picked up wins in the pole vault with Nixon’s clearance of 10 feet and Donovan Howes’ toss of 129-5 in the discuss.

“We appreciate the Snowshoe Foundation for helping us put on an event like this,” said EHS coach Scott Biola. “We also want to thank the countless volunteers who made sure everything from field events, track events, to concessions went smoothly.”

Bridgeport racked up 193 points to capture the boys meet, followed by Elkins, Philip Barbour (75), Tucker County (64), Braxton County (51), Preston (49), Lewis County (32), Webster County (18), Pocahontas County (10), Tygarts Valley (7) and Petersburg (1).

Philip Barbour’s Malachi Poling captured both the high jump (6-0) and long jump (20-05), Isaiah Starks was runner-up in the 200 (23.09) and fourth in the 100 (11.52), the 4×400 relay of Hayden Dalton, Jacob Burner, Poling and Patrick Webster was first in a time of 3:45.91, Aidan Phillips won the shot put (42-7), and Dylan Phillips was second in the discus (124-11).

Tucker County’s Nate Ricottilli was first in the 400 (52.57) and Reid Kisamore second in the 100 (11.47).

The EHS track teams return to action this Saturday at Mylan Park’s Morgantown Invitational; field events will begin at 11:30 a.m.
