McDaniels, Westfall power Bucs past Tigers
TENNERTON — Buckhannon-Upshur scored six runs over the first two innings en route to a 9-2 victory over Big 10 Conference rival Elkins Monday night at William E. Phillips Memorial Field.
Brody McDaniels’ bases-clearing double highlighted a four-run second inning.
He also had an RBI single in the first.
Jaxon Spratt tallied run-producing doubles in each of the first and second innings as well as the Bucs built a 6-0 lead for starter Jerin Westfall, who scattered one hit and fanned eight in pitching four scoreless innings.
Trent Stone had a two-run homer with Braden Cooper aboard to put the Tigers on the board in the fifth.
Weldon Zirkle answered with a solo blast to left in home-half of the inning for B-U, which added a two-run single by Tucker Mason in the sixth to conclude the scoring.
Owen Stanley was tagged with the loss for Elkins, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out three in going the first 1 2/3 innings.
Zirkle and Clay Lantz finished in relief for the Bucs, each recording two strikeouts.
Blayne Thompson finished in relief, surrendering three runs (one earned) on three hits and fanning three.
McDaniels went 3 for 3 at the plate in the win with his four RBIs.
Thompson had a pair of hits for the Tigers, who are now 8-11 and will host Preston at 6 p.m. today.
The Bucs (11-6) host Morgantown at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
