RCB edges Tigers; Bucs, Bulldogs roll
ELKINS — Robert C. Byrd plated two runs in the fourth inning to hold off Elkins, 5-4, Saturday in Big 10 Conference action.
The Tigers (4-7) had taken a 3-2 lead in the third inning as Blayne Thompson and Owen Stanley delivered RBI singles and Trent Stone cracked an RBI double.
Jaxson Maglowski earned the win for the Flying Eagles, going the distance and allowing just one earned run on seven hits, striking out six and walking one.
Dyer Barger took the loss in a complete-game outing, scattering eight hits and fanning 10.
Stanley finished with two RBIs in the loss.
Elkins was slated to visit East Fairmont on Monday.
B-U 10, Preston 2
KINGWOOD — Weldon Zirkle cracked a grand slam and also got the win on the mound as Buckhannon-Upshur picked up a 10-2 win over Preston Saturday in Big 10 Conference action.
Zirkle went five innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out nine and walking three.
Brody McDaniels finished in relief, striking out four.
Jaxon Spratt added a solo homer in the third for the Bucs.
Cooper Thaler and Lyric Moats had RBIs for the Knights.
Ayden Ward was tagged with the loss.
B-U (7-1) was slated to visit Bridgeport on Monday evening for another league contest.
Bulldogs capture DH
HINTON — Adam Woods tossed a no-hitter in the first game of a doublehader as Tygarts Valley swept Summers County on Saturday.
The Bulldogs recorded an 11-0 win in the opener as Woods struck out nine.
Zayden Defibaugh had two RBIs at the plate for the Bulldogs and Austin Gear a pair of hits.
Tygarts Valley erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning to claim a 14-3 win in the nightcap.
Corban Oldaker and Cooper Markley had two-run singles during the uprising.
Oldaker, Gear and Markley had two hits each in the win.
Oldaker earned the win on the mound in relief of Markley, who had five strikeouts, allowed two unearned runs on one hit in going the first four innings.
The Bulldogs (10-4) travel to East Hardy on Wednesday.
