WVU players to receive NFL opportunities

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia football went this year’s NFL Draft without a player from the 2025 team selected by a team in the league. There were former players selected, like Akheem Mesidor, who was picked in the first round by the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Mountaineers ended their streak of having players drafted, but they weren’t the only Power Four team to not have a player selected in one of the seven rounds. WVU was one of 10 schools, which included Colorado and Oklahoma State from the Big 12, and local schools Virginia and Virginia Tech, to not have a draft pick.

But there were some players who landed on NFL rosters or received an opportunity to make a roster. Here is where some of the 2025 team ended up after the draft.

Michael Coats Jr. CB, Cleveland Browns

WVU cornerback Michael Coats was one of the players with a real shot of being drafted towards the end of the draft. Coats went undrafted, but he was quickly scooped up by the Cleveland Browns. He signed an undrafted free agent contract and was one of the only players from the 2025 to so far.

Coats was the top corner on the 2025 team and, for part of the season, was ranked as one of the top corners in the Big 12, according to PFF. He had 30 tackles, two tackles for loss, forced a fumble and had seven pass breakups.

Coats had a strong showing at WVU’s Pro Day, too. He ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, which put him in the top 25 times at the NFL Combine if he were invited there. Coats was pleased with his performance.

At the time of the Pro Day, Coats hadn’t heard anything from any NFL teams. But Coats was picked up by the Browns after the draft. He joined one of the top defenses in the NFL and an entirely new coaching staff. Cleveland fired Kevin Stefanski and hired the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator, Todd Monken, this offseason.

Reid Carrico LB, Cleveland Browns

Linebacker Reid Carrico, who was one of the hearts of the defense last year, has a chance to make an NFL roster after he was invited to the rookie mini-camp with the Cleveland Browns. Carrico heads back to Ohio, where he grew up, and where he started his college career with Ohio State.

Carrico worked through injuries and still made an impact throughout the 2025 season. Carrico had almost 70 tackles, eight tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and recovered a fumble. Carrico also had a strong combine.

Carrico joined his teammate, cornerback Michael Coats, in Cleveland. Coats signed an undrafted free agent contract.

Eddie Vesterinen DL, Minnesota Vikings

Defensive lineman Eddie Vesterinen received a rookie mini-camp invite with the Minnesota Vikings. Vesterinen has the chance to move from Finland to West Virginia to Minnesota if he performs well in camp.

Vesterinen was a familiar name with the Mountaineers and didn’t transfer after the coaching change. He played five seasons at WVU and missed one entire season with an injury. But last year, Vesterinen finished with 30 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and one fumble recovery in 12 games. Vesterinen also participated in WVU’s Pro Day.

The Vikings finished third in the NFC North and ended the season on a five-game winning streak. Minnesota made some moves at defensive line this offseason, so Vesterinen might be able to make the official roster.

Jeff Weimer WR, Kansas City Chiefs

One of the most reliable targets for true freshman Scotty Fox Jr., wide receiver Jeff Weimer, was invited to rookie mini-camp with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Weimer slowly carved out a role in WVU’s offense in 2025 after fighting with the NCAA over eligibility issues. Weimer emerged as one of the top receivers for the Mountaineers and had 21 catches, 383 yards, two touchdowns and had a big 75-yard touchdown to give WVU a chance in the Arizona State game. Weimer only played for one season under Rich Rodriguez, but he felt like he was prepared to take the next step at the next level. He didn’t receive a combine invite.

The Chiefs are looking for a big bounce-back year after missing the playoffs and an injury to star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Chase Wilson LB, New York Jets

Linebacker Chase Wilson was right there with Reid Carrico as the leaders on WVU’s defense last season. Wilson received a rookie mini-camp invite from the New York Jets.

Wilson played just one season with the Mountaineers after transferring over from Colorado State. He was a staple of the defense and played on 40 or more defensive snaps in nine games. Wilson had 46 tackles, including 24 solo stops, and added 4.5 tackles for loss (three sacks), two interceptions and two pass breakups. Wilson was the do-it-all guy on defense.

He participated in the Pro Day and will have his shot to make the Jets roster in the coming weeks. The Jets’ defense struggled in 2025 and didn’t register an interception all season. New York had the second-worst record in the NFL last season, so it can use all the help it can get.

Starting at $3.92/week.
