Elkins High athletes shatter marks in Big 10 meet

ELKINS — Led by Marissa Brenwalt’s high-point effort, Elkins finished third in the Big 10 Conference Championships held Tuesday at Irwin Track on the EHS campus.

Brenwalt, who was named the Female Big 10 Track Athlete of the Year, racked up 36 points and set Big 10 and school records with a time of 14.65 in the 100-meter hurdles.

Brenwalt also captured the 300 hurdles (48.92) and finished second in both the high jump (5-0) and long jump (16-6.5).

The Lady Tigers’ Emilia Tenney also broke the conference mark in the 1,600 with a time of 5:09.43.

Also capturing first for Elkins was Julia Biola in the 800 (2:19.70). The junior also anchored the winning 4×800 relay team, which also included Alyssa White, Haley Kelley and Molly McFadden, that turned in a tome of 10:10.66.

Buckhannon-Upshur finished 11th with 21 points and received a first-place showing from junior Rylen Carlyle in the long jump (16-10.5).

Bridgeport took team honors with 127 points, followed by East Fairmont (112.83), Elkins (96.83), Fairmont Senior (87), Lincoln (53), Preston (53), Robert C. Byrd (52), North Marion (37.33), Lewis County (29), Grafton (24), Buckhannon-Upshur (21) and Philip Barbour (9).

The EHS boys, meanwhile, placed second to Bridgeport’s 174 points with 142 points.

Lincoln (78), East Fairmont (56.5), Grafton (50), Preston (43), North Marion (41), Philip Barbour (39), Fairmont Senior (38), B-U (20), Robert C. Byrd (16.5) and Lewis County (4) rounded out the field.

Trevor George led the Tigers by setting a new Big 10 and school record in the 1,600.

George’s effort of 4:19.75 broke Mark Nichols’ school record of 4:21.94 set in 1980.

In the 800, Bobby Valentine beat George’s (1:59.01) recently established school record with a time of 1:58.68 to place second behind Fairmont Senior’s Landon Jones (1:58.54).

Valentine and George also teamed up with Josh Bodkins and Dylan Fortney to establish new Big 10 and school records in the 4×800- meter relay with an 8:06.72.

Elkins also placed first in in the 4×200 in a time of 1:32.11. The unit was comprised of Elias Jones, Jaden Hatfield, Lucian Breault and Randal Marks

Meanwhile, George, Breault, Fortney and Hatfield captured first in the 4×400 (3:31.20), while Preston Nixon won the Big 10 crown in the pole vault with an effort of 11-0.

Placing second for the Tigers were Donovan Howes in the discus (138-7), Marks in the 100 (11.18).

“Seeing those set school records and meet records at the Big 10 Conference was spectacular, “EHS boys coach Adam Romano said. “The coaching staff is very proud of these young student athletes.

“All the hard work is really paying off as we get into the postseason.”

For Philip Barbour, Patrick Webster won the high jump with a leap of 6-0, Aidan Phillips was second in the shot put (47-8) and fourth in the discus (120-10) and Dylan Phillips third in the discus (126-0).

Elkins returns to action in the Class AAA, Region II Championships at Keyser High School on Thursday, May 14.

Philip Barbour will also compete at Keyser High School in the Class AA, Region II Championships next Wednesday, while B-U ventures to Laidley Field in Charleston for the Class AAAA, North Regional Championships on Friday, May 15.

The state meet will be held May 22-23 at Laidley Field.
