ELKINS — At the season-ending championship for the U.S. Kids Golf, young golfer Valentina Aguilar, of Elkins, delivered a performance to remember, overcoming difficult weather conditions and pressure-filled moments to capture the league championship in the girls 11-12 age division.

The championship tournament was held at the beautiful Shenandoah Valley Golf Club on the challenging Old Course, where Valentina entered the final round sitting second in the overall league standings despite missing the first tournament of the season. Through consistent play and determination during the year, she earned enough points to climb into second place entering the championship and secured a spot in the final pairing alongside the league’s top players.

The day began under cloudy skies, and Valentina came out strong from the opening hole. She mixed several birdies and pars with a few bogeys while staying composed during the early part of the round. However, conditions quickly became difficult as heavy rain and extremely strong winds swept across the course, making club selection and shot control a major challenge for every competitor.

Aguilar opened the 2026 season of the Callaway Junior Tour recently at Stonewall Resort as junior golfers from across West Virginia gathered for the first event of the season.

Aguilar demonstrated determination, resilience, and high-level shot-making throughout the tournament.

After battling through a difficult front nine, Aguilar responded with an impressive turnaround on the back side of the course. Her momentum began with a par on a par-3 hole where she narrowly missed a birdie opportunity. She followed that with consecutive birdies, including a spectacular performance on a par 4 where her approach shot nearly dropped in for an eagle, stopping just six inches from the cup for a tap-in birdie.

Aguilar closed the back nine with an outstanding score of 41, one of the best stretches of golf of the tournament day.

Her strong finish not only earned her first place in the Girls 14-and-Under division at just 12 years old, but also secured the tournament’s Best Score Trophy for recording the lowest score among all female competitors, including players in the 18-and-under division.

The impressive start provides momentum heading into the remainder of the Callaway Junior Tour season,

She also continues practicing with the John Ballantyne Memorial Junior Golf Program, where more than 40 young golfers are developing their skills and passion for the game.

The toughest moment came on the ninth hole, where the harsh weather contributed to a costly double bogey, leaving her with a front-nine score of 38. Despite the setback, Valentina remained calm and focused as the weather gradually improved around hole 12.

Showing the confidence and maturity of an experienced competitor, she settled into her rhythm on the back nine. A key moment came on the 15th hole when she rolled in a birdie putt, followed by a series of steady pars that kept her momentum going heading into the final hole. One of the biggest keys to her victory was her consistency on the greens, where she finished the tournament without a single three-putt and recorded only 30 total putts during the round.

Then came the unforgettable finish.

Standing on the final hole, a par 5, Valentina hit a perfect driver straight down the middle of the fairway. Determined to reach the green in two shots, she confidently attacked the pin with her second shot. From her angle, it appeared the ball may have bounced into a bunker near the green. As she searched the bunker area, she suddenly realized the ball had actually landed safely on the putting surface — approximately 32 feet from the hole.

With complete focus, Valentina went through her normal putting routine one final time. She struck the putt perfectly with the right speed, and the ball rolled directly into the hole for her first eagle ever in tournament competition.

The dramatic finish completed a remarkable back-nine score of 36 and a final round of 74, giving her first place honors by five shots over the second- and third-place finishers. The victory officially crowned Valentina Aguilar as the Northern Virginia League Champion in the girls 11-12 division.

“Playing in the Callaway Junior Tour and winning there gave me the confidence to perform my best at this competition,” Valentina said after the round. “I look forward to playing more tournaments during the summer because my grandpa, Dr. Franyutti, will be able to see me play.”

Valentina also shared that one of her newest goals is to shoot an even-par round — something she believes is getting closer with every tournament. She plans to continue practicing hard throughout the summer season as she prepares for her next event during the first week of June when the Callaway Junior Tour resumes.

Starting at $3.92/week.
