Wildcats rally past Bulldogs in regional play

Pendleton County’s Mason Miller makes contact against Tygarts Valley in Tuesday’s Class A, Region II contest.

MILL CREEK — Pendleton County rallied for a 10-7 win over Tygarts Valley in eight innings Tuesday night in Class A, Region II action.

Jaxon Simon had a two-run single and Chase Owens an RBI single in the eighth for the Wildcats.

The Bulldogs picked up a run in the bottom of the inning when Corban Oldaker singled in Jacob Wamsley and had the tying run on base before Travis Owens got a strikeout to end the game.

Tygarts Valley led 7-3 but Pendleton County rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh when Travis Owens cracked a two-run double and Chase Owens brought home a pair with a single to left to tie the game.

The Bulldogs threatened in the home-half of the inning when Caleb Teter led off with a single and Austin Wilson drew a one-out walk.

Travis Owens then got a strikeout and groundout to send the game to extra innings.

Chase Owens’ two-run triple in the first gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Tygarts Valley answered in the third when Preston Smith reached on a two-base error and Wamsley and Austin Gear drew walks to load the bases.

One out later, Oldaker’s bloop single to left plated Smith and Wamsley.

Gear then scored on a balk call to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.

Tygarts Valley tacked on three more runs in the fourth as Woods lofted a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Austin Wilson, who had led off the frame with a double, and Wamsley homered to center.

Simon’s RBI groundout in the sixth cut the lead to 6-3.

The Bulldogs replaced the run, however, in the home-half of the inning when Smith led off with a single and later raced home on a wild pitch.

Oldaker and Wamsley finished with three hits apiece in the loss.

Chase Owens had five RBIs to lead the Wildcats. Simon, who tallied three RBIs, and Cohen Hiett had two hits each.

Chase Owens also was credited with the win on the hill, pitching 3 1/3 innings of relief, fanning five.

Wamsley went the first five frames for the hosts, striking out eight and allowing two runs on four hits.

Woods, Cooper Markley and Zayden Defibaugh finished in relief.

Tygarts Valley will now host Pocahontas County in an elimination game, while Pendleton County will face the victor at the highest-remaining seed, needing one win to earn a state berth.
