Lady Bucs stay alive in regional action

TENNERTON — Sixth-seed Buckhannon-Upshur staved off elimination in the Class AAAA, South Region tourney with a 10-5 win over seventh-seed Parkersburg on a cold and soggy Thursday evening.
The Lady Bucs (24-9) will now host 10th-seed Woodrow Wilson. The winner visits third-seed Parkersburg South, with the victor advancing to the state tourney.
Top-seed Cabell Midland and second-seed George Washington clinched state berths with wins on Wednesday, leaving two spots remaining from the region.
After the Lady Big Reds pushed three runs across in the top of the first inning, B-U responded with eight runs in the home-half of the frame, highlighted by Charity Talbott’s three-run homer.
Kynnedy Marple’s lead-off double, a single by Payton Brown and walk to Braylea Squires loaded the bases.
Zoey Burr then lined a single to center to bring home two runs and Maddie Tucker followed with another single to tie the game at 3-3.
After Talbott homered to center, Madi Knabenshue later brought home another run on a groundout and Marple finished the scoring in the inning with a double to left to plate Kristine Frye.
An RBI sacrifice bunt from Fye in the second increased the Lady Bucs’ lead to 9-3.
After B-U picked up another run in the fourth, Parkersburg got back on the board in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by JoJo Wilson and Ella Collins and an RBI groundout off the bat of Brynn Frye to cut the lead to 10-5.
Marple went the distance to earn the win, scattering six hits, striking out six and walking just one.
Addi Cameron was tagged with the loss.
The Lady Big Reds finished the season 11-15.
