Squires’ homer lifts Lady Bucs to win over Woodrow Wilson

ELKINS — Elkins High’s season came to a conclusion Friday night in a 12-10 setback to Bridgeport in Class AAA, Region II action.

The Lady Tigers finished with a 12-16 record.

Gabby Mahanes went 3 for 4 and had four RBIs for Elkins, which trailed 9-3 after the Lady Indians plated six runs in the second inning and were plagued by eight errors on the evening.

Senior Hailey Riffle went 3 for 3 with a triple in her final high school contest.

Senior Maddie Lambert was tagged with the loss, striking out four.

B-U 5, Woodrow Wilson 3

TENNERTON — Braylea Squires two-run homer in the fifth lifted Buckhannon-Upshur to a 5-3 win over Woodrow Wilson in a Class AAAA, South Region elimination game.

The Lady Bucs (25-9) will now travel to Parkersburg South at noon today, with the winner earning a state tourney berth.

The contest was knotted a 3-3 before Squires’ homer to center with Payton Brown, who had led off with a double on base.

Charity Talbott went five innings to earn the win, allowing three runs on four hits and fanning four. Kynnedy Marple worked two hitless innings of relief, striking out one.

Madi Knabenshue’s RBI single in the fourth had tied the game at 3-3.

Kristine Frye also had an RBI for B-U, which overcame a 2-0 first-inning deficit.
