SOUTH CHARLESTON — Potomac Valley Conference members Pendleton County and East Hardy dropped decisions on the first day of the Class A state tournament Wednesday at Little Creek Park,

Fifth-seed and defending state champion Pendleton County lost a 4-3 verdict to fourth-seed Wheeling Central.

The Lady Wildcats held 3-0 lead before the Lady Maroon Knights tallied four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Seneca Heller had a two-run single and Sydney Hupp laced a two-run triple.

Pendleton County built a 3-0 cushion on Lexy Tingler’s RBI single in the second and an RBI sacrifice fly by Jessica Parker and run-producing single from Laney Bowers in the fourth inning.

Susan Vincell was tagged with the loss in six innings of work, allowing five hits, fanning eight and not issuing a free pass.

East Hardy, meanwhile, lost a 2-0 contest to top-seed Wahama in a pitchers’ duel between Madison Strosnider and Gracie Banks, who tossed a complete-game two-hitter with nine strikeouts in earning the win.

Strosnider was on target as well in being the hard-luck loser, giving up just one earned run on one hit, striking out four and walking four.

The Lady White Falcons scored the game’s lone runs in the bottom of the second inning on a wild pitch and Abby Flowers’ RBI double.

Strosnider and Bella Bauserman had the hits for the Lady Cougars.

Pendleton County and East Hardy were slated to battle in an elimination contest later on Wednesday evening.
