Petersburg bests Logan to win Class AA crown

Petersburg players celebrate after defeating Logan, 6-5, to win the Class AA state championship on Friday.
SOUTH CHARLESTON — Second-seed Petersburg plated a run in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Logan, 6-5, to capture the Class AA state title Friday evening at Little Creek Park.
It was the first-ever state softball title for the Lady Vikings, who went undefeated over the course of the tourney and advanced to the championship game with a 10-6 win over Logan on Thursday night.
With one out in the seventh, Nettles reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Miley Tingler then reached on a fielder’s choice, sending Nettles to third, and Ella Chew was intentionally walked to load the bases for Ella Markwell, who hit into another fielder’s choice with Nettles racing home for the eventual game-winning run.
Gracie Carpenter and Kinsley Crites both saw time on the mound for Petersburg.

Markwell went 1 for 4 at the plate in the win with three RBIs, while Miley Tingler was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored and Chew and Cheynenne Sites had two hits apiece.
Journee Akers and Ashlin Brumfield had two RBIs each for the Lady Wildcats, who led 2-0 after scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.
Petersburg answered with single runs in each of the second and fifth innings and three in the third to open up a 5-2 lead.
Logan drew even with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
In Class A tourney action, fourth-seed Wheeling Central defeated top-seed Wahama, 12-2, in Friday’s championship game.
The Lady Maroon Knights finished the tournament undefeated and needed just win over the Lady White Falcons to clinch the title.
With the contest knotted at 2-2, Wheeling Central plated three runs in the top of the sixth to seize control as Seneca Heller doubled in two runs and later scored on Erin Maxwell’s fielder’s choice.
The Lady Maroon Knights blew the game open with a seven-run outburst in the seventh.
Chloe Groome had a three-run homer during the frame, while Morgan Miehle cracked a bases-clearing double and Bella Rine an RBI single.
Miehle finished with four RBIs in the win,
Defending state champion Pendleton County was eliminated by Wahama, 11-0, in Friday’s first game as Gracie Banks twirled a four-inning no-hitter, striking out four.
The Lady Wildcats finished with a 20-8 record.
The Class AAAA and AAA portion of the state tournament gets underway Tuesday at Little Creek Park.
